Everything about this restaurant is bland. Like the colour of the décor, it’s a grey and drab experience. Even my husband, who was doing his best to like it, said that the background music was “sounds to cut your wrists to”. I wonder if it was the chef’s night off, as the food was the sort of thing I make... More

Vg value at £16 pre-theatre. Best Prosecco I've ever tasted. Lovely decor & ambience. Food was a mixed bag. Tasty croquette starter. The Szechuan Pork Belly however was about as Chinese as tartan. Nice but lacking any Chinese flavour. The mixed beans that came with it were clearly out of a tin. The dessert was a Meringue. Out of a... More

Visited with a friend the other evening before heading to the theatre - our first time visit, but certainly won't be the last! The food was superb, coupled with the presentation and friendliness of the staff. Definitely book and enjoy the experience, you won't be disappointed.

Had a meal here with my wife while on holiday in Edinburgh. The food here was outstanding on a par with many more expensive restaurants, I would thoroughly recommend it. It was a real shame that we were the only people in the restaurant all evening, however do not let this put you off the food more than makes up... More

This restaurant is close to many Fringe venues so we tend to eat here in the busy month of August but the food and service is always very good. Short, tasty menu with efficient and friendly staff.

Always eat here when we visit Edinburgh , usually a few times each throughout year . never disappointed . Great front of house staff - Heather , and very nice food . Reasonable prices . Everything very tasty, can recommend sea trout . Shared a salted caramel brownie dessert which was gorgeous . Can't fault anything .

A group of us were attending shows around George Square and went to Sylvesters for a quick, early dinner. We expected a pre-theatre menu (which was still advertised on the board outside the restaurant), but during the Festival there is only one menu available. The menu is a little seafood oriented but with reasonable choice. The whitebait starter was very... More

We had a lovely meal here. The set menu is very reasonably priced and the food well prepared and tasty. Staff were helpful and we enjoyed ourselves.

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
