Being an Edinburgh born and raised lad that now lives down South I wanted to show my wife a bit of the home town for our third wedding anniversary. For our first night we booked the Burns supper and ceilidh. This was held in the main auditorium a breath taking room. The staff were very attentive and the food was... More

We've been to the Ghillie Dhu several times as it is a great pub and restaurant. I've also piped for a wedding reception, which was fantastic. Great atmosphere.

We attended the Hogmany Ceilidh and were one of the few lucky enough to get in at the beginning. Saying that, when we entered the venue you could already tell that there was no crowd management happening and it was getting out of control already. It was really dishonest and irresponsible of the management to overbook this event. Once inside,... More

Our party bought tickets for this venue for Hogmanay in November. Even though we had bought tickets we were turned away at the door because the company had sold too many tickets. Our party have been in contact about a refund and we're promised a call back. This hasn't happened and it is now 2 weeks since Hogmanay. Looking at... More

Good food and good service. We sat in the restaurant and you get a little window that opens to the bar where you get your drinks served. Quite fun! Food was delicious, cooked well. Lots to choose from also.

A group of 15 of us had tickets for the Hogmanay Ceilidh. We arrived around 12:15am to a massive queue of people. Shortly after, we were told we could not get in because the venue had overbooked and sold too many tickets. After I emailed them, I got a phone call last week from the Glasgow office assuring me of... More

After pre-booking, we were refused entry due to the over selling of tickets. I had a number of visitors from the USA and France, all looking forward to a Ceilidh. We had to go home early in very low spirits. It was one of the last nights in the country for my girlfriend who has moved back to the USA... More

Ghillie Dhu is an appalling venue. We traveled from London to Edinburgh for NYE. We turned up at the venue bang on time to be greeted with a huge queue, hours wait and eventually no entry. The cehilid band advertised wasn't even playing and general chaos ensued. Falsely advertised, poorly organised and badly understaffed. I know many others also suffered.... More

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
