Great food, friendly staff, service was good and we weren't rushed. Starters were particularly good value for money. Would've been a very reasonably priced meal if we hadn't had beer!

We were in Edinburgh for a couple of days as a birthday treat and this restaurant was recommended to us. The food was excellent as was the service and the place had a nice ambience. We had a wonderful welcome from the manager Andrea who even put up with my wife's poor impersonation of Inspector Montalbano !!!! We found the... More

Spent a lovely evening with family at La Lanterna, Hanover Street. We have visited this family run restaurant many times over the years but found this time it had been taken over. We were very pleased to receive a warm welcome from the new manager, Andrea who was attentive, cheerful and very professional. The restaurant has been renovated to a... More

Had a very tasty meal, very fresh. Meal was let down by the lack of interest of the staff. Ordered a glass of house red wine and white came to the table. Asked for iced water, it eventually came with the ice cream. I live close by and this was a second visit and although the food is good I... More

Called in midweek with husband for a meal as we had hoped to bring friends from out of town later in the month, the food very good but service very poor, around 5 staff who were standing around as it was quiet enjoying each others company which did not extend to the customers! Poor service no mention of specials no... More

I went at Lunchtime and was surprised to discover a 3 course menu for less than £7. The potato skins were crispy, well seasoned with 2 choices of dip. ( Yes fresher lettuce would have been better as mine was brown around the edges.) I could choose between pasta or pizza and had a lovely fresh La Lanterna, which was... More

Arrived about 10 minutes before booking and staff very polite and friendly. New makeover is amazing and the food is out of this world. Travel to Edinburgh a few times a month and this will be my go to restaurant.

Good to see a nice new Italian opening up in Edinburgh that serves excellent food for reasonable prices, I was overwhelmed by the quality and presentation of the food. The atmosphere is fresh and cosy. I would highly recommend people visit here, I'll be returning for sure.

I walked in and thought I was in Italy, took the hubby here with the kids on Saturday night, there was such a great atmosphere, Started with the scallops, they were to die for. Sebastian has the oysters, some of the best he's had. And followed with the lamb rump and the duck both pink of course, cooked perfectly.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
