A good traditional no frills pub with a great selection of ales. Food was excellent and locally sourced. Haggis neeps and tatties was spot on. Visited at 2pm on Saturday afternoon, but unfortunately there were no tables available. Came back the same time on Sunday and there was plenty of tables.Good relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Well worth a visit.

We stopped in for dinner on our first night in Edinburgh. We were quite lucky to get a table without booking on a Friday evening. The atmosphere was relaxed and casual which was nice. Our starters of mushroom soup and devilled kidneys were delicious. The haggis, neeps and tatties & salmon and daal main courses were hearty and tasty. Enjoyable... More

Having suffered with some seasonal shopping, we were in need of an emergency stop before getting the bus home. 1780 in Rose Street was just the place. Mid-afternoon and the place was empty - but we were soon getting round some drinks, and then with the arrival of a group of 16, the place was buzzing again. Next time we... More

This is a great place if you are interested in Beers and the steak is awesome. I experienced friendly and knowledgable staff and the best cooked steak I have had in a long time. Although a little on the pricey side for steak (300g), salad, and a glass of red one (£31.90) I did feel that it was worth the... More

We came to Edinburgh for a couple of days as we were attending a ceremony at Usher Hall. We were unsure of where to go but came across this lovely cosy pub/restaurant in Rose street. The atmosphere was calm and relaxing and the waitress who was called Rachel and from Spain was simply charming, lovely cheerful personality, she was efficient... More

Had a bit of a wait for a table but was worth it. Food was good and we got a table in the back that was cozy and romantic. My only warning is to be aware of all the burning candles. I nearly caught my coat on fire by the ones on the coffee table!

I visited this restaurant on the 22/10/16 my boyfriend order the haggis which was nice but I ordered the ribeye steak which was awful, FULL OF FAT & I asked for well done & it was still pink. I was still hungry so I ordered the Eton mess which was the only thing I liked on the menu, which was... More

Dear Aloe Vera, I'm so sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience. We really appreciate your feedback and hope you do give us the chance to make it right! Despite Saturday night being a busy night I am sure all our staff always check back on the tables to make sure customers are happy with their food. I am wondering... More

Not so familiar with Scottish pub food and primarily looking for some good ale, we would have been happy to just have some scruffy Burgers; and were slightly 'shocked' by the amazing food (especially the soup) we got served alongside- yes in that order- of some fabulous ales! The waiter was also very keen to help us find the best... More

The 4 of us stopped in after visiting the castle and had a light lunch. The soup was excellent as was everything else. It was quaint and cozy and we really enjoyed our time there.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
