Located in what was once the All Saints Parsonage, the Cloisters simply screams ambience - though, I would not scream within the walls of any cloister. It is warm and comfy; there is a fireplace, stone walls and a well-worn wooden floor. Upon entry, you can step to your right and relax in the formal dining room; or turn left... More

Cloisters is one of my fav bars in Edinburgh. It is always bustling and cosy and has a fantastic selection of real ales and beers as well as cider and wine too. It also does food too.

Timeout called it: "A beery, ecclesiastical oasis for more than two decades" I tried the local IPA from Stewart Brewing of Loanhead, just outside Edinburgh. But for me I want music, live or not, and not that much light. Full bar on a wednesday.

Having followed Cloisters on Twitter, I had seen the previous day's ale board and saw a vast array of beers on tap, keg and cask. A veritable real ale lovers idea of heaven makes Cloisters bar pretty apt as it had been part of the adjoining church. I opted for a Titanic Brewery Plum Porter and savoured it's lovely notes... What more can I say, if you're into the game Ingress this pub has more players per sq ft than I've ever seen!! A few of them can handle their mead too, so watch out!

A lovely warm pub on a horrible wet evening. A proper fire and plenty of comfortable seating. Decent selection of drinks at reasonable prices. A local was accompanied by two well behaved Dalmatians. Just a nice old fashioned welcoming space.

As all the previous review testify, if you enjoy your beer, Cloisters is a must. On this visit my compatriot and I enjoyed our beers, but the food was slightly underwhelming. Fish and chips of the frozen variety was our choice - it was ok, no better. It soaked up the beer and that's about the best you can say... More

Excellent choice of ales and a nice atmosphere. I was hoping to visit more than once on my trip to Edinburgh, but sadly ran out of time. A must visit if you want to try some new ales and stouts.

This pub is heaven for beer drinkers 5+ gravity pumps plus a couple of gas pumps serving a variety of beers every time I've been in. There's also a variety of bottled beers and whiskeys. Yet to have a bad pint in here. The atmosphere is relaxing and the staff very friendly. I've yet to eat in here but I've... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
