Very handy for theatre goers. Good range of beers and lots of tables if you are dining. Very traditional bar.

Good ambiance. Large bar with plenty of seating. Fish and chips were good. Stayed in a hotel next to it and seemed to be a lively place each night.

We were really surprised by this establishment. Service was top-notch, while having one of the best meals in our lives. Brilliant restaurant. When we walk in, I thought that it was just a simple pub. But I'm really glad that it was just the first impression.

Excellent service in a beautiful little pub/restaurant directly next door to the Royal Threatre of Edinburgh. The outside of the restaurant is delightful - fresh greenery and statues. It definitely matches the decor of the theatre. The inside is decorated with signed posters of previous musicians and plays to come to the Threatre. I had mussels (the large portion), and... More

We went for Sunday dinner as we stayed in a nice hotel around the corner. We were very pleased with the food and service. We had the traditional fish and chips and also the meat pie. Need I say they also had good beer. We actually came back our last night as well, then it was more crowded so we... More

We ate here on our last night in Edinburgh for dinner. We made reservations but didn't seem to be too necessary. The food was great. Service was above and beyond. Prices were incredibly reasonable.

Had dinner here for the first time on a recent visit home with my mum. Went in just for a drink and saw the menu and thought we would just stay for dinner. Lots of room, good decor, a good vibe next to the theatre and the menu whilst small is good with a nice choice. Was tempted with the... More

This bar has a large oval bar but trying to get served was a problem. It wasn't the fact that there wasn't s enough bar staff. It was just you physically could not get to the bar. Two large areas were designated non service areas were there were a load of unwashed glasses. The rest of the serving area was... More

Well we had to try Hagis and so we had an appetizer of Hagis Nipps and Tatties. This was a large order and delicious. My wife had the haddock and I had the rump steak. These were served with chips and salad. The plates were very generous and the prices were very reasonable. Service was excellent. The atmosphere was adorned... More

Was through in Edinburgh for a football match at Easter Road, and after checking in to my hotel on York Place, decided that I would go for something to eat in The Theatre Royal Bar as it was just across the road and would be passing it any way. Really nice and inviting place, with really friendly staff who do... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
