This was a return visit and last time we enjoyed our meal. Lukewarm welcome and the air in the restaurant was smoky as if food had been burnt and the extractor fan clearly not working. We were nodded to a table in the middle of the floor and got a couldn't care less response when we asked for one free at... Nipped in on a Sunday lunchtime for a quick bite to eat upstairs, decided to for the sharing platter, polenta chips and a couple of drinks. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. Hardly enough food to feed one person for a light lunch, never mind two and to charge £19.00 for the privelege - unimpressed. If they want... More

Called in for lunch and a glass of wine. Just had a simple bruschetta with caponata topping. Very nicely cooked and the suggested wine was very good. Went a few years ago and there was a brilliant film, I think Breakfast at Tiffany's being projected onto the wall. Very memorable experience however not done now because 'it is too messy'!... More

Stopped off here on Sunday 13th November as we were in Multrees walk and fancied a decent coffee. First of all (and to get one of the few positives out of the way) I would not hesitate to say that the coffee was exceptional and one of the best I have had in Edinburgh. But... The poor standard of service... More

For a coffee shop in the uber swanky Multrees Walk area of Edinburgh, Valvona & Crolla doesn't take itself too seriously and is warm, welcoming and a great place to grab breakfast. We came here for a treat one morning and despite the breakfast bill coming to £16 for a couple of hot chocolates, a pastry and some porridge, it... More

Excellent coffee is expected and delivered. And cakes and more. There is a restaurant above, yet to be visited, but the cafe bar does very nicely indeed on the area net to Harvey Nich's and the redeveloping St James Centre (about time too). This is a chic place. V&C in Jenner's has the views and more of a deli; Elm... More

Dropped in here whilst waiting for the shops in mulltree walk to open. Had intended to just have a coffee, but ended up having breakfast. Was really pleasantly surprised. Quality place. Friendly and attentive staff. Bacon roll and coffee were very nice and prices ok. Will definitely go again.

Nice italian for a quick bite to eat when in city centre shopping. Upstairs is the Italian restaurant which is a good but more expensive and the cafe is downstairs which is smaller dishes and more affordable prices. Lots of healthy Italian food on offer as well as lots of sweet treats. Good atmosphere in the place and service was... More

We ate here whilst on holiday recently in Edinburgh. Service was friendly and efficient - we sat outside in the little square in Multrees Walk as the sun was shining- lovely. We ordered the sharing meat and cheeses platter between the 2 of us, as we only wanted a light bite- it was delicious though and we could have easily... More

We struggled to get an eatery on a Monday night in Edinburgh in July but we were delighted that Vin Cafe delivered. We were met by very friendly staff and enjoyed a delightful pre theatre meal which was both tasty and well balanced. The wines were good and we had a lovely seat by the window overlooking the shoppers and... More

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
