I was looking for a good Italian close to The Playhouse and chose 'Asti' due to how close it was and the great reviews on Trip Advisor and it didn't disappoint. Literally 2-5 minute walk from the Playhouse/our hotel, would maybe be about 10-15 from Waverley station/princes street (and would say it would be worth the walk) The pre-theatre menu... More

We came here for dinner on our short stay in Edinburgh and it was some of the best food we have ever eaten! The service was brilliant as we asked to move table and they did everything in their power to put us somewhere more preferable, they were then very friendly and we felt very welcome! Would recommend (especially the... More

Out for lunch with friends so thought we would give the place a try. We were certainly impressed. Staff could not do enough for us. We all chose a 2 course lunch which was very reasonably prices. We all enjoyed our food but as the portions were quite large we had no room for dessert. The menus were good and... More

Greeted by very friendly staff who were very attentive. I had the polenta chips as a starter which were great, and then lasagna which was also excellent. Good portion sizes and the food came out very quickly. We went here before a show and weren't worried about time at all. Would definitely go back.

Fantastic Italian restaurant. They manage to accommodate us without booking but with an hour and a half restriction which was more than enough time for a great two course dinner and lovely Bellini. Great start to our NYE celebrations 🎉

Four of us visited Asti in Broughton St, Edinburgh. Three had the a la carte and one the pre-theatre menu. What superb food. That, coupled with pleasant staff, made for a great evening. Small but intimate restaurant. I've had a few risottos in my time but I have to say the risotto al pesce affumicato was outstanding. Great little find.... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
