We went here on Friday night as someone had bought us a voucher for Christmas. The lady who greeted and seated us was professional and friendly but our waiter left a lot to be desired. He had glasses and brown hair, didn't catch his name. He had a very brusque manner and spilt our water without apologising or even saying... More

The restaurant manages to be formal with a relaxed informality that immediately makes you feel at home with the surroundings. Nothing was too much trouble and the food was fantastic. My husband and I ate a beautifully prepared starter and main course. The Restaurant Manager then arranged for us to have cheese and biscuits in the lounge, the chef came... More

This was a very pricey meal - £75 a head for only two courses, a drink beforehand and a reasonably good bottle of wine between four of us. However, the food and service fell well short of the standard you'd expect for that sort of cost. Service: we were booked in at 6 for a pre-theatre meal, and arrived at... More

We had an early, pre-concert meal, which was a very mixed bag. Unfortunately, we were running a bit short of time and could only have a main course: entirely our fault and perhaps did not give the restaurant a chance to show off its paces properly. Greeting and bill handling were exemplary, but there appeared to be a training need... More

We counted Galvin's as a favourite. The atmosphere on arrival was of chaos. It was busy but this is in a 5 star Hotel. We had to wait to be acknowledged whilst a member of staff counted out cash. When she eventually spoke and we gave our name she clearly could not see our reservation. We were asked about drinks... More

This is a conveniently situated and nicely decorated place. The service was excellent and the food ok but overpriced. It just wasn't anything special for the pricing. They have a peculiar confirm twice by email system which the waiter was quick to point out we hadn't re- re- confirmed. This would have been ok except that I had tried twice... More

We went for lunch with a Travelzoo voucher. We were not expecting too much because of the voucher but were very pleasantly surprised with everything, especially the staff who individually were all extremely attentive and pleasant. The Senior Restaurant Manager (Eric Arens) ensured the service to us was excellent which we did not really expect with a voucher. Well done... More

Was taken to lunch for a business meeting and treated to a delicious meal. Staff were all smartly turned out, courteous and friendly. Our waiter explained the menu. The food was a really special and well worth the visit.

I returned again this year to visit The Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo and to celebrate my 75th birthday. I had a lunch for 10 in The Galvin Brasserie in the Salon Privé. We all chose our own dishes but each had a special dessert that had been especially created for me. All my guests agreed that the food was delicious... More

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
