We have eaten here as a safe bet over 30 years. Never again, thaali was tepid and just a variation on starch with poor spices or flavours Most disappointing: avoid

My vegan girlfriend and carnivore I visited in December 2016. We got there as it opened at 17:30 so were the first customers. It soon filled up and most tables were taken for the time we were there. The menu was extensive and, for Edinburgh, not expensive. My mango lassi was a highlight. My gf enjoyed her vegan thaali and... More

We had a lovely buffet all you can eat vegan lunch for under £9 per head without drinks. Not everything is vegan, but they point out what isn't.

Had an amazing dinner at Kalpna - the vegan thali was brilliant, it even came with dessert ^_^ and its such a treat to be able to have naan bread since most usually contain dairy. Attentive staff and didn't think it was too expensive. Would definitelt visit again :-)

We visited as it was recommended on peta as a top vegan place to visit in Edinburgh, but when i looked at the reviews i was a bit apprehensive. I shouldn't have been. This place not only offers a warm, friendly welcome, but also fresh, flavoursome, epic vegan Indian food. DO IT.

Brilliant food and service. We had the big mixed platter for £17.95 and then added the rice pancake and a cauliflower dish.....we were told it was too much but we ate it all up even though we were stuffed....we couldn't leave anything....it was too good. Don't miss it if you are in Edinburgh

We've visited Kalpna for the lunch buffet last week as I've heard a lot of good things about their food. And being vegetarian and not trying out a vegetarian Indian place that's been in Edinburgh for so long seemed unacceptable! The food served on the buffet was very nice and varied, and overall we thought it was a great value... More

We had definitely one of the best vegetarian dinners at Kalpna when visiting at Edinburgh. Service, food, atmosphere = lovely and brilliant. One of those experiences that you remember for decades.

We ate here a few nights ago and were not impressed. The masala dosa didn't taste right, it tasted burnt. The mango lassi was like mango flavouring with yogurt rather than real mango. The thali was just very poor, the sauces did not taste authentic, and poppadums tasted like rancid oil. The restaurant seemed like a place which had seen... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
