You can't beat this restaurant for vibe and food. Relaxed atmosphere and traditional Mexican food. We were a group of eight and everyone had a fantastic meal. All starters and mains were excellent choices and the sharing starter for two, feeds three! The mango cosmo cocktail is amazing! An unexpectedly nice touch was that we were celebrating two birthdays and... More

My wife and I had dinner here on Saturday,18th March. We had booked in advance online and upon arrival, were shown immediately to our table for two. The restaurant is a lot bigger than the streetview would indicate and it is clean and the decor is excellent. The restaurant was extremely busy but nevertheless, our servers were on the ball... I've been here twice and both times service was sorely lacking. The waitress we had last night didn't even crack a smile, gave us one word answers and didn't even say thank you when we paid. The food is not good enough to put up with such service. Would not recommend it.

Although not the best mexican food I have ever had, have to massively praise this restaurant for their staff and the attentiveness to my allergies. They were amazing as were the drinks!

Restaurant is in a good location. They made a real Mexico inside the restaurant! Food was just Simply amazing! Prices- Similar like in any other mexican restaurant. Enough space for bigger groups (i will recommend to book the table in advance) Enough options for vegetarians!!! :D

I really wanted this to be great. The place is vibrant and has a really good vibe for a good night. The service was good and they accommodated us when they were already busy with friendly staff. The food though was just disappointing, good size portions but for an independent restaurant I would just expect fresher flavour. It was nice... More

This place is a hidden gem in Edinburgh. You are guaranteed tasty food, good wine & a warm welcome in this restaurant. The atmosphere is so friendly you could stay all evening. The service is fast & of excellent quality, this is well worth a visit for a relaxing meal & a taste of traditional Mexican food.

Really proper tasting Mexican food, brilliant nachos (yes seriously some people can't get these right) My girlfriend and i opted for the nachos each and i had a beef enchilada which was spicy tasty and a good sized portion. The lunch deal, jug of cocktail and a liquer coffee each £48 for 2, great value friendly service, more places should... More

My daughter and I really miss home (I am from San Diego, CA) and were hoping that we were going to have real Mexican food. Well, the corn quesadillas were great. The salsa wasn't very flavorful, the guacamole was without much spice, the flour tortilla tasted packaged and the bean were not refried! It tasted more like TexMex. Smoky flavor... More

Went to this restaurant in February after seeing it on trip advisor, the food was delicious had nacho's and enchilada's, they also have yummy cocktails. The restaurant seemed to be very busy so maybe book a table to avoid disappointment.

Description
The Gonzalez family opened Viva Mexico in August 1984, intending to bring the true taste of Mexico to Edinburgh, and 31 years later we are still striving to do the same. In the intervening years there have been many changes, notably in how the restaurant has grown, but we are still trying to do what we set out to do all those years ago - to give all our guests a real flavour of Mexico. With three rooms spread over two floors the restaurant is equally suited for romantic dinners for two, quick business lunches or parties, the back room particularly can cater for a single group of up to 25 seated at tables or 40 as a buffet.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
