With so many excellent places to choose from in Stockbridge for breakfast we went for this cafe & were not disappointed! I had the butchers breakfast, which as the name suggests was not for the faint hearted with great bacon, sausages & black pudding. My partner had the veg breakfast which had wilted spinach to give it variety. Really good... More

We stopped in here for lunch on a cold winter's day. Six of us, spread either side along a long table. A number of us had the soup of the day - a hearty tomato soup with oatcakes on the side. I and my daughter plumped for a sour dough cheese toastie each, with fig chutney - delicious! My son... More

My girlfriend and I love this place, during a year in Scotland we have been at Maxi's every single week because we fell in love with the home-made scones, the best in entire Scotland. Also the coffee shop is very cozy and the staff super friendly. Since we left Edinburgh, there has not passed a day where we did not... More

After a lovely walk along the Waters of Leith, cheerful friendly service with wholesome food. Funky rustic decor.

Have been here for coffee and lunch several times and have yet to find fault. It seems to get very busy especially at weekends and rightly so as everything about Maxis is quality. Prices seem fair for the location and quality of what is on offer and the ambience is pleasant. On one of my three visits it was buzzing... More

We didn't stay to have lunch as 20 minutes was too long for soup and oatcakes!! No smiles or eye contact from the waiting staff meant we weren't keen to stay. Went to another cafe nearby which was fantastic.

Came last Sunday at noon, busy got a table just but clearly 3 servers was not enough, really two plus a barrista. Plates uncleared for ages, tables not wiped down properly. Service when it came was ok Had a coffee and eggs Florentine, both good, daughter loved her smoothie and French toast. Needs to up their game in fashionable Stockbridge.

Went here for a late breakfast lunch, and have been before, about 6 months ago. Full scottish was very tasty, good sized portion, but the service was quite poor. They appear to be a bit chaotic, the staff don't appear to know what their priorities. We sat down at a table which still had used dishes on it, as did... More

We popped in here on Saturday and were lucky enough to get a table, its always busy and you cant book or really wait so it can be a bit hit and miss. You order at the service desk which was fine with us both going for the poached eggs and local bowers sausages. The food came in very good... More

Staying in Stockbridge & Dean Village

Neighbourhood Profile
Stockbridge & Dean Village
Just downhill of New Town and attractively straddling a river near the elegant Royal Botanic Garden, it’s small wonder that Stockbridge became one of the city’s first hip neighbourhoods. It’s now one of Edinburgh’s most desirable, though many bohemian touches have fallen away as its residents have matured and the area has gentrified. Some second-hand shops cling on, but mostly residents display refined tastes in basement bistros, gastropubs, coffee and antique shops, boutiques and delis and at the Sunday farmers' market. A pleasant ten-minute walk away, along a leafy riverside path beside the gurgling Water of Leith, lies Dean Village. This sleepy neighborhood of medieval half-timbered houses still retains much of the village feel it had when watermills plied their trade here. Beyond, the wooded riverside path feels even more remote as it climbs to the sculpture gardens of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
