Had wanted to try this place for ages and glad that I finally got to! The interior is cool, set out like an old diner, and with a really good atmosphere. The staff are really friendly and go out of their way to help too, and since I'm pretty big on customer service, this was really appreciated! I had the... More

If you want a filling and inexpensive meal in a venue that is just a good old caf, this is your place. There are nods to the retro (old beano comics knocking about, and the posters dotted around the room) but it's not necessarily themed in that way. The menus are well-used, and everything feels rough and ready, but if... More

Myself and my son decided to go here this evening for our tea whilst on a trip to Edinburgh. It's kind of like an American diner style and a little old fashioned BUT if like us your not after pomp and fuss then it's perfect. The two ladies working there were such friendly welcoming people. After my son chose his... More

Great staff, amazing food! I have been a frequent customer for years; I still can't get enough. The best steak and ale pie in Edinburgh. Highly recommended.

Had the shepherd's pie for dinner. It was delicious, and a massive portion too, so filling. Convenient location, walking distance from the royal mile. Seemed pretty popular. Great service.

This place was super enjoyable, and despite the veggie sausages being oh so suspiciously exactly the same as the super common supermarket brand we all love, it was still a good meal. The mushy peas were amazing and the serves of all food were generous and about averagely priced for the area. I just would have appreciated more "home cooked"... More

Don't look in and walk past, this is just up the road from Greyfriars Kirkyard and well worth a visit. Very friendly staff and wonderful comfort food. If you go for sausage and mash you get choice of several sausages, several types of mash and some different gravies. The Steak and Ale pie should also not be missed

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
