My great aunt & uncle have been visiting this restaurant for longer than I've been alive. So it was chosen for a family meal & no one was disappointed! The food was really excellent with lots of seafood options & the usual classics. 6 of us had starters inc crispy duck, wafer paper prawn, squid, soup, & sui mai. Mains... More

Have had great meals here over the years. The king prawns in Szechuan sauce are off the charts good! In fact, they are spike your napkin good! The king prawns are massive in size and unbelievable in taste! The beer selection is very good with the food. For my tastes, it's a toss up between washing the prawns down with... More

I'd heard a lot about Kweilin - lots of Edinburghers insist it is the best Chinese in town. So, 11 years into my Edinburgh live I finally made it along. And it was decent. Not the best Chinese I've had in town (that honour is still with Chop Chop) but certainly very good. And it is Cantonese - different, more... More

Dinner on a Saturday night, pre-booked - the restaurant seemed full. The decor is very traditional 'high-street' Chinese with faux Chinese lanterns and large brush paintings, i.e. it's not a contemporary 'dining space' with a designer decor. The food is similarly 'high-street' Chinese, but honest and hearty with classics on the menu - Peking duck, lemon chicken etc etc. Starters... More

After living over 40 years in the region, and hearing good reports in that time I was not disappointed in my first visit on 9th October, I was not too busy, the service was to a very high standard and the food was in a class of it's own in ethnic cuisine outside the country of origin. Definitely a Gold... More

Our latest visit to Kweilin was disappointing. The starters were good but the chicken in the main course was very hard and tasteless. We did bring it to their notice but were told that next time they will take care( if there is going to be a next time for us). Disappointing response from the place, with no apology whatsoever.

I was invited to a private view at the Scottish Gallery. The silversmith Michael Lloyd was having a one-man show - and very good it was too! Afterwards a small group of six of us were invited to this restaurant just across the road from the gallery. It was a splendid evening. Christina, our host from the Gallery suggested that... More

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
