When i visit Edinburgh i will always make time for Monteiths from now on. Amazing service and food. I can not fault it in any way. My steak was cooked to perfection, it is on the pricer side but it's worth it for the food you get.

I've been coming here regularly for the last few years and I've never been disappointed. I'm always greeted with happy, helpful and knowledgeable staff. The food quality, standards and presentation are amazing! I love the cocktails, especially the spicy Bloody Mary. I love coming here and getting lost in time with its cosy atmosphere. Keep up the good work guys.

I have wanted to visit Monteith's for quite a while, both on friends' recommendations and with its positive ratings in reviews, so I didn't hesitate for long when an ItIsOn voucher for Christmas lunch at Monteiths came up. Casting aside my usual reticence regarding restaurants and Christmas lunch I persuaded myself that in such a prestigious restaurant I would be... More

My wife and I have visited Monteiths twice in recent months, once for dinner, once for lunch. Both times have been really enjoyable, both the food and service have been excellent each time. The steaks we've had were cooked exactly as ordered. We've also had the seafood chowder and a couple of desserts, all of which were delicious. The atmosphere... More

We came in with my family. It looked like a really nice restaurant with nice music. Scallops that came out: bacon burnt, scallops underseasoned and messy presentation. My dad ordered a side of brusselsprouts: totally hard and raw. Complained and nothing was done to make up for it. Mum ordered a lobster which was very bland. The service was lazy... More

Delighted to experience the close entrance, leading to an all round quirky experience & ambiance! Cocktails were delicious, aided by the barman determining our preferences for vodka, tequila etc as we chose. Cosy armchairs to sip our drinks as we waited for a rearrangement of our dinner reservation. We arrived earlier than anticipated but the helpful staff were able to... More

A visit was planned during a girls trip to Edinburgh to see the Christmas market. The menu was checked beforehand as I am a vegetarian. The menu said in small print at the bottom that further veggie options are available upon request. We arrived and the only vegetarian option was a smoked beetroot starter dish. I already expected this so... More

We had the most wonderful experience once we found this beautiful gem on High Street, The Royal Mile (it is hidden a bit back from the street, but very close to The John Knox House) Wonderful and accommodating staff in the lovely and cosy surroundings, with uneven chairs and music from the 70's and 80's at suitable soundlevel, meaning that... Yes there are cheaper restaurants in Edinburgh, however the seasonal food along with the recommended bottle of Malbec are worth every penny. It's not the easiest place to find but the twinkle lights just draw you in. Thanks again guys it's a must place to visit.

Description
Monteiths kitchen prides itself on using great quality ingredients that are locally sourced where possible. Provenance is hugely important and we work closely with our suppliers to ensure that our food comes from farm, to plate as quickly as possible. Although we frequently change our menu to reflect the changing seasons we also have a range of specials including dry aged fillet steaks and chateaubriand available. There is also a selection of seasonal dishes from the sea including fresh Scottish lobster and oysters

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
