Ate here on a short trip to Edinburgh. The food and service were excellent. I can not say enough about how much we enjoyed our meal there.

.... I would have given you 5 stars. On arrival, 12.30pm Friday 7th April there were 8 customers in the restaurant including ourselves, the service was good. Less than half full an hour later and the service steadily transpired to dreadful! Attempting my next armagnac and macchiato I happened upon the waiting staff texting in their back room hideaway on... More

I went to Iris about four years ago and it made such an impression on me that when I decided to invite a group of friends to Edinburgh for my birthday I chose to book a table for us. The service was wonderful and even though we were a big group they made us feel very welcome and not at... More

Lunch here on a busy Saturday but a really nice experience. Good selection of choices for each course - difficult to choose but all very tasty. Staff friendly and helpful and restaurant has a nice, airy feel to it. Definitely recommend.

This place absolutely blew us away. We had some trouble finding it, but once we were inside we knew we had come to the right place! The place was full to the brim with locals - thankfully we were still given a table, as the food was nothing short of spectacular. Best salad I've ever tasted, Seafood and Meat were... More

Chanced on this restaurant whilst scouting away from the main centre of town. Booked previous evening because everywhere was so busy. What a find, as good as any and better than a lot of others. Good menu choice nothing outlandishly expensive and good range of wines. Friendly staff and excellent service. Four of us came away having had a very... More

This really is a fantastic restaurant. Visited on a busy Saturday night with friends - hadn't booked but luckily we got a table. Excellent, varied & interesting menu with lots of choice. Nice, relaxed atmosphere & friendly staff. The food was superb - really delicious & freshly prepared. Good wine list too & both food & drink reasonably priced. We... More

I think this is a superb little restaurant. The staff could not have been more polite, friendly & professional and the food was very good. Reasonably priced and very tasty. I had the Pig Cheek and Monkfish - both superbly presented and tasty. My wife had the Ricotta starter & the Pork Belly - both delicious. With an ok bottle... More

Description
Tucked away on Thistle Street, Iris has been a welcome addition to the Edinburgh restaurant scene. This chic little bistro - with its designer wallpaper, banquette seating and rough stone walls – has an intimate, cosmopolitan vibe, and is popular with a discreet and sophisticated creative crowd. The modern European menu is guaranteed to impress, we love the roast duck breast with fresh raspberries and Drambuie; chicken supreme stuffed with langoustines served with a garlic and herb buerre blanc; and the roasted quail with spicy potatoes served with an orange and rocket salad. Ideal for stylish working lunches, and informal evening meals, Iris also has an extensive wine list with up to 17 bottles for under £20.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
