I've been to this restaurant several times over a number of years and love the ambiance. Wherelse could you get good French home-cooking at lunch-time, with exquisite French wit and bonhommie? You need a good sense of humour and a strong self-esteem to appreciate le patron, who is a 'marmite' character; you instantly either love it or hate it. I... More

Over the last 12 or so years we have been here a few times. While you could never describe it as a gourmet experience, the food is authentic 'rustic' French, the setting on the shaded1st floor terrace overlooking the River Lot is very pleasant, and the entertaining patron, Alain, more than makes up for any shortcomings. I have read the... More

Delicious authentic and simple food. Excellent value for money in a beautiful setting. Simple food done well doesn't need anything flashy.

We went to Auberge des Gabares accepting that the owner was a 'character', but expected to get good quality food. What a shock we received. The food could be most kindly described as basic home cooking and the owner seemed much more intent on his 'look at me' performance than on providing any kind of service to his customers. On... We stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant on our first visit to Cahors. It was lunch time and we thought we had made a big mistake. The patron has a very brusque manner and is, at first, quite scary. We were greeted and a big pot of soup was then unceremoniously dumped on our table with a ladle for... More

We were guided to this gem of a restaurant by our good friends. We were looking forward to a good lunch and we weren't disappointed. On arrival we chose to sit in the terrace outside however quickly changed our minds as the weather was not too great. To move to an inside table was no problem; in fact nothing was... More

Found this restaurant by accident having a stroll through Cahors. Great location, adjacent to the river and - at least from outside- good view of a fast flowing weir. Attracted by the formule which suggested three courses for 15 Euros, we thought we'd give it a try. Inside was a bit basic with a seemingly brusque patron, but underneath lay... More

The owner is a real character very polite but direct,no frills. Food was ok, set 4 courses 2 choices for main course, meat or fish when we went, no further description from the owner who I don't think speaks English Overall a very entertaining evening but don't expect haute cuisine, more simple French.

Went for a girls lunch and was not disappointed. The menu varies every day and you have the choice of three starters, three mains and three desserts with a choice of local wines at 3 euros a glass. A two course meal with wine and coffee cost me 22 euros. The dishes are original and full of taste - will... More

the concept behind the auberge is that you eat what we made today - full stop, there is no menu, there is no a'la' carte, there are no options. if you happen to come with kids, like we did - and they happen not to be able to eat something, you have a problem. the place is run by a... More
