My father was in the military based near Heidelberg and this was a place he frequented back in the 50s. I came with him when I was 14 and returned again with my family almost 40 years later. It has a good location right off a square in the Old Town. It is cramped and dark with heavy wood timbers... More

Zum Roten Ochsen appeared in a very famous travelogue in 1933, being run by the Spengel family. I first visited in the 60's and very many times since. Always have I experienced a very warm welcome, great German cuisine and drinks and always I am sad to come away. The cuisine is wonderfully German, there is some pampering to tourists... More

THE WORST restaurant service that I've ever experienced. Hopefully no one experiences the same after reading my review.  Even though we made a reservation five hours ahead of the time for the family of five, we were forced to sit with others as soon as we entered. I am pretty sure that a family of five is more than enough... More

Very interesting interior. Very good service. Good food as well. However, we are not big fans of German food so not so crazy about it!

Zum Roten Ochsen (the Red Ox) is a symbol of college life in old Heidelberg. As a student drinking pub, it has drawn young & old for years. As a GI in Heidelberg we frequented Roten Ochsen and its nextdoor neighbor Seppl often. Drinking games are popular. Students will chug from a 3-liter glass boot, passing it about their table.... We arrived on a busy evening without a reservation. Many restaurants would have turned us away. Instead, the staff at the Roten Ochsen said they were happy to serve us if we could complete our meal within the hour. We did! The venison ragout was excellent. Service was friendly and very efficient. The dark wall panels covered with antlers and... More

Zum Roten Ochsen (The Red Ox) is one of Heidelberg’s oldest and most traditional student pubs, run by the Spengel family for more than 170 years. It’s easy to imagine students raising hell on the premises in the old days; today, the Red Ox is more polished and attracts lots of tourists, which is not to be understood in a... More

This was our first stop in Germany. The restaurant is so charming inside filled with old photographs, you can tell that it has been a favorite spot for years. The food was very good, not the best we had in Germany but definitely a great spot for a nice lunch and a beer. I would recommend going early or late... More

I loved this place. It was recommended to us but unfortunately we arrived without making a booking. The staff were superb and found us a table in no time at all and the service was most efficient. The food, in the Traditional German style was delicious. The beer was cold and very refreshing. The place was decorated like an old... More
