I used to go here as a Medical Student. I went back several times since graduation. Last time was this year: they are still the same great place to eat gambas(shrimp). Do not miss the gambas al ajillo or gambas a la plancha. Make sure you ask for the house wine. Red or white, it will go with the gambas.

The nice thing about this place is that it is genuinely filled with Spanish, not tourists, and the place is hopping all night long. Everyone comes for the plates of bubbling shrimp in garlic sauce, but also try the vermouth, Lacuesta, which is absolutely outstanding. Ask for it on the rocks, and it makes the perfect complement for the shrimp.... More

We reserved a table for 5 and ordered a few tapas to share. The sardines tapas were very tasty and the rest of the dishes (garlic shrimps, garlic tomatoes, salmorejo) were good but pricey. The annoying thing was the lack of any knife and especially the raised eyebrows when we asked for some extra small plates to help sharing.

Get the gambas ajillo with bread! The shrimp is perfectly cooked, and the sauce is good enough to polish off with the bread!

We were able to get outdoor seating without a wait, and the shrimp-- our reason for coming-- did not disappoint. Pricey by Madrid standards. Our server was relatively indifferent (compared to much more positive interactions we've had in Madrid).

Have been reading about Abuelo ( Grandfather) before we visit the city. One afternoon we visit the place. We ordered one gambas ajillo , bread and glass of white wine. All food are related to gambas. Genuine place. Worth a visit.

Simply put...this is the best shrimp I have had. Our group of five all agreed. Shrimp was served bubbling hot in garlic butter with bread. Would definitely recommend. Going to return for more tapas tonight.

We walked past this place and it looked inviting, once inside we were not disappointed, the food and staff were great, all the staff were very helpful with the menu and we had a great night. The Gambas were good as well as the Razor fish, wine by the glass was exceptional for the price. We would visit again when... More

Visited the stand-up bar twice on a Sunday in March. One of those places which makes you want to plan another trip. Atmospheric - good wine - good food. A bit expensive, but will definitely be back.

La Casa del Abuelo is one of the Tapas Bars that you can't miss if you visit Madrid. This house is more than 100 years old and it's one of the most representative Taverns in Madrid. Specialities are shrimps in all of its varieties: grilled, with coarse salt and looking for the prefect cooking point and garlic shrimps, served in our terracotta casseroles with virgin olive oil, garlic and parsley.
The tradition is to eat the shrimps with the red sweet wine "El Abuelo" that made this house famous.
Today everything is served the same way than 100 years ago!

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
