I looked at some previous reviews, and I can agree with elements of the positive and negative reviews. We were meeting some friends at Puerto del Sol and were looking around for something not too touristy before they arrived. We stopped for a coffee here and it seemed to be a little different to the more obvious "Menu del dia"... More

Very traditional restaurant, where the locals appear to go. Very nice mixed paella between two of us, which was very good, but perhaps a bit pricey at €35, but having said that the service was very Good, throughout the meal.

My Asturian friends would abhor the "typical" food here. We had a three course meal where nothing was fresh or specially nice, to put it mild. The waiter recommended the delicious Hake Supreme which returned untouched back to the kitchen; not only was it frozen, watery and insipid, it was a fake hake, too. The bill was very real, though...

Good Fabadas Asturianas, a typical dish from Asturias with its regional drink apple cider. Nice service.

We had the Asturian Stew, the cider and dessert among other items. All was very good, the stew especially savory. It was Sunday after New Years and not many others in the place. The waiter / maître d was very gracious and attentive. When asked he told the history of the establishment (there since 1926) and about its recent remodel.... More

This place was near my hotel so my group and I stopped in for a quick drink. It was quite traditional, range of tapas on display, various drinks and tissues on the floor. Staff were not the most welcoming or friendly but the clientele, mainly locals, were. Nice enough spot but there are lots of other more appealing places aroound.

We were staying at the Hotel Liabeny (very nice), and our first night in Madrid and being tired from the flight from Canada, we sought a place nearby....we chose this one. Decor is average I would say compared to others we were in later. The staff were very pleasant and our waiter was helpful, funny & courteous. I had my... More

If you like spanish cider this is the place! The serve draft cider which tastes just amazing and you get some free tapas with your drink. Cheap option for a snack on the go. I've eaten lunch there too and they have good old spanish dishes. The quality is outstanding and the service good (not sure if they speak any... More

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
