The Plaza Isabel is a busy square in the heart of Madrid, it's vibrant, busy, eclectic, with sways of people coming and going. A great place to people watch, but, normally that means accepting mediocre food and service at high prices. To be fair it started off like that, the was a little surly, but given the hectic turnover, it... More

By now, our third night in Madrid, we'd happily migrated from Brits to Madrileños! We were still in our hotel at 10pm having a long relaxing glass of wine each and decided we should go for our meal; outrageously late for us Brits. As there were a lot of Leicester City football fans chanting in the Plaza Major where we... More

when we entered this place, I believed this to be just another place where they sell tourist overpriced food with poor quality. Luckily, this is NOT a place like that. We ate some meat tapas and food was really good. Expect to pay different prices if you will be eating or drinking at the bar (cheaper option) then sitting at... More

We came here on one of the Devour food tours. We had slices of Iberian Ham, Campo olives and Bruschetta. A really tasty selection of Tapas!

We were very disappointed by this place. Very well located but the service is absolutely unpleasant. The waiters are not attentive to the clients who are not Spanish making you waiting for being served during a long time. Drinks are served with glasses filled more then unevenly... in a nutshell- a place to avoid! Un endroit à éviter! Service désagréable.... More

Located on the corner of Calle Arenal and a little Plaza by the Theatre, this was a great place to have a drink and watch the world go by. We visited each day we were in Madrid. Very generous free tapas with each drink. Friendly waiters and great service.

Simply delicious! We were on a Tapas, Taverns and History tour with Devour Madrid tours, and Taberna Real was our first stop, mere moments from our meeting point by the statue of Isabel II. We had a glass of sweet vermouth (delicious) and a plate of Campo Real olives to start (likewise delicious). The restaurant hand-makes their chips (crisps) and... More

We happened upon this place by accident. Really nice outdoor seating looking at the Opera building. Makes for a great atmosphere. Food excellent. Only negative was a problematic beggar that the staff didn't shoe away. Normal for the area.

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
