We sat here on a beautiful Saturday afternoon and ordered some food. After half an hour no food arrived and when we asked we were told it was coming but they were very busy as there were a lot of people. I noticed that many of the people around us who had also ordered food were waiting. When we could... More

I had a mini tortilla as I was not so hungry. It came extra dry and in the middle was not baked at all. Like a lava cake, but this was a lava tortilla. My wife had paella and she said it was average.

We stopped in for mojitos and stayed for tapas and more mojitos! Excellent calamari, carbonara and paella! The staff really made the evening extra special as we watched the sun go down over the palace.

We had tapas at the restuarant in January. It's in a beautiful building a short walk from the palace. The waiters were lovely and the calamari was delicious!

Went to this bar a couple of times during our Madrid stay. First time was to shelter from the rain in the day and the second time we went back later the same night as we enjoyed the day so much! The wine was lovely, every round came with a tapas, starting with bread and jamon, then olives and bread,... More

A few minutes walk from the Royal Palace, this is an excellent little restaurant. In scorching August temperatures, we sat in the shade outside, not realising until later that the inside was beautifully air-conditioned. A plate of meatballs in spicy sauce, mixed croquettes, a Spanish omelette and two bottles of water - 28 euros. Friendly service, good English spoken.

We wandered over to this cafe because it was near the palace and cathedral and we were thirsty. After ordering water, we decided on the mixed plate of Manchego cheese and Iberian ham. It came with little croutons and we ordered some olives on the side. The olives were over priced and the dish itself was small for the price... More

We ate at this restaurant 3 times during our stay and the service and food could not be faulted. The cold soup was excellent as was the tuna salad. Fish here is recommended, but to be honest everything was good, with a friendly waiting staff, who welcomed you with a smile. We sat outside on each occasion, and were also... More

We ate outside because it was so dry but it was a bit chill. There looked to be a nice wood burner inside and it was busy when we went inside to use the loos. The food was ok, not great but the staff were lovely and bagged up what we couldn't eat for us to give to someone homeless.... More

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
