We came across El Botanico after strolling through Retiro park after visiting museums in the area that morning. It sits on a quiet corner site opposite the park & just looked the perfect place to stop for lunch, the outside terrace was full bar 2 tables with reserved signs on them, I approached the waiter who said they were fully... We had Sunday lunch here. Quick service and waiters all spoke English. Seating inside is good with high ceiling bright room. Food was great for a reasonable price.

Just opposite the botanical gardens in central Madrid we tried this restaurant as recommended in our guide. Very friendly staff and a couple of groups of local people were enjoying the atmosphere. Speciality dishes on offer and reasonable prices. The highlight for me was my starter - Burrato with truffle caviar. Fresh and delicious.

We had lunch here and it was without doubt the best lunch we had in all of Mardid. The food was very well presented and was absolutely sumptuous. Also the prices were more than acceptable. I can only recommend this El Botanico, you want regret it. Do what we did, walk around the Prado Museum all morning and then come... More

I visited this restaurant for lunch recently and was warmly greeted and shown a good table inside (all outside tables in the sun were occupied). I was very well served by waiter Simone. I was treated to some nibbles before my Caesar Salad which was the best I have ever had! This was followed by a home-made tiramisu which turned... More

We decided to stop here for a drink to enjoy a bit the sun on the terrace. One waiter came and ask if it s to drink or to eat. Once we said it s for a drink he said something we couldn't understand in Spanish and left to serve other table. He never came back to us. Don t... More

I ordered a burger and asked in my best tourist Spanish for it to be well cooked. It turned up raw, I mean not even rare but literally inedible. They just plonk the food on the table and runaway before you can talk to them. Terrible place.

We happened on the place after a tour of the botanical gardens next to the Prado. The only problem was finding a table but they squeezed us in. The big surprise was the high quality of the food in such a tourist location. We had a tomato salad with the best tomatoes in a long time, that had been peeled... More

We stopped here for lunch after a lovely walk around the Botanical gardens. The food was lovely and the atmosphere was relaxed. Service was a little slow but we were in no rush. We would visit again if in the area

Description
The spirit of Paris in Madrid There was a time in which Madrid wished to be like Paris, and this lovely district "Los Jeronimos" is the outcome of such pursuit... It was our King Alfonso XIII, who after travelling across the old continent, realized that Madrid did not have a majestic district in line with Europe's trends back in 1900. Manuel Hidalgo, in his novel "Las meninas andan sueltas", mentioned that these Maids of Honour used to escape the painting to walk around the Prado and, in one street leading access to the Retiro Park, they used to relax in a majestic terrace as in the King's dreams for Madrid. Most likely the writer was thinking of "El Botánico Café". El Botánico is placed in a privileged location surrounded by the Prado Museum, the Botánico Garden, the Jerónimo's Church, the Retiro Park and the magnificents hotels Ritz and The Palace. El Botánico has been a witness of the world of culture, cinema and aristocracy, with characters such as Sir Paul Mc Cartney, Bono (U2), the Princess Elena .... and many other world citizens who have chosen Terraza El Botánico to enjoy a peaceful moment.

Staying in Paseo del Prado

Neighbourhood Profile
Paseo del Prado
The area around the elegant Paseo del Prado boulevard is much-visited by both locals and tourists. The world-famous Prado, the Reina Sofia, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza museums form a triangle of art and culture that spans this grand and beautiful avenue. On weekdays, the Prado Museum opens its doors for free after-work hours, drawing a diverse and excited queue of art lovers that wraps around the block. Palacio de Cibeles and Círculo de Bellas Artes cultural centers are other artsy hangouts to check out, with rooftop bars that provide impressive views of the city. While the Paseo del Prado and its roundabouts form a busy throughway in Madrid, a broad green pedestrian park in the middle is a calm and gorgeous place for a relaxing stroll. Just east of the museums, the Retiro Park is always a confluence of activity as families and friends of all ages take to the pretty paths and lawns to stretch their legs or to have a picnic.
