We hoped to eat some typical, simple Spanish food here. The interior is rather dark and definitely needs some renovation (not to mention the toilet). The waiter wasn't too nice and seemed to have no time for us. The place was quite busy at that time but we saw other waitress smiling and chatting with guests so it wad still... More

A great little pit stop for a couple of plates of tapas and a glass of wine. Friendly service and fantastic surroundings.

We ate as a group of friends hoping for something authentic and this also had the bonus of flamenco, good option we thought. The first and most important thing to say is please don't be put of by the surroundings as this is worth a visit. However you will need to speak a little Spanish or have translate option on... More

This would ideally rate 3.5 stars if that were permitted. It is a very traditional Madrid eatery, with a bar serving tapas at the front, in an atmosphere of dark wood, bulls' heads and stools to sit on. At the back a restaurant with rather upright country chairs and paintings of old Madrid and bullfighting. The food is exactly what... More

We were having a great time in Madrid, for our final evening we decided to book here for a meal because they widely advertise flamenco dancing at 9.30pm on Friday nights. Two mediocre main meals ONLY and a few drinks cost more than 50 Euros and the flamenco advert us just a lie to trap tourists to this establishment to... More

Went in 2014, loved it! Went again in 2016 and fell in love again! I enjoyed every tapas the place offered. My favorite 2 tapas were the white anchovies tapas and the snails in sauce. I recommend this place to anyone visiting Madrid.

I went to this restaurant / taberna knowing that it was the oldest of Spain, and I had a really great time. The staff were very nice and the food quite tasty. It was a magical experience, certainly to repeat!

I was recommended this place by a local, which is always a good thing when looking for somewhere new to try out. The Taberna Antonio Sanchez has been around since 1830 - you can feel the history as you step through the door - from the benches on your left as you enter, to the bullfighting memorabilia on the walls... This old-fashioned restaurant and bar does good traditional tapas and excellent wine. It also has a restaurant in the back, and serves a competitively-priced menu del dia. The small grilled peppers with sea salt and garlic - pimientos del padron - are very moreish, and the service is efficient and friendly. Prices are reasonable.

Excellent Spanish food, more from the center than the mediterranean style. One of the oldest bars in Madrid, it's tradicion started in 1830 and it has been running since then. If you want to taste what "typical" means in Madrid, this is your place. Prices are mid range, about 20 Euros per person for a good dinner with wine.

Neighbourhood Profile
Walking into this neighbourhood is like entering a different country ... except it's hard to tell which one it is. One side of Calle Lavapiés is lined with Indian restaurants, the other with kebab shops. Men in traditional African clothing convene outside their businesses for long chats, and people shout to each other across plazas and streets. Interspersed among ethnic specialty shops are independent theaters and dance studios, and two large arts and cultural centers — the beautiful Casa Encendida and the Tabacalera, a former tobacco factory — all of which attract young crowds. Along Calle Argumosa, the place to go for drinks, artists and art appreciators with piercings and dreadlocks convene in the street’s eclectic array of young, hip bars. Though some of the side streets can get a little seedy at night, Lavapiés is still the place to go for those seeking a unique blend of arts and culture in an international and funky neighbourhood.
