We walked by this place in the afternoon while exploring the neighborhood. We were immediately tempted by the large display of baked treats in the window, some quite large and others small. We settled on three small tarts--chocolate, lemon, and honeydew--and enjoyed all three. A perfect little sweet to fuel our afternoon adventures. We got them for take-away (they came... More

We were walking by and became distracted by the cakes. We went in to sample a few but could find no tables free. So we bought some cakes and went off to sit in the Retiro Park. Very reasonable prices for some very tasty cakes.

We had a very nice experience here for breakfast! Sat at the bar and were waited on by a friendly man who helped us as we don't speak Spanish. My cafe con leche was great, and when I ordered a croissant, our friend helped and offered (by motioning) if we would like it sliced and heated. Didn't just give up... More

Went for a coffee and a breakfast, good fresh pastries, quick service. They have nice selection of sandwiches and omelettes. Got freshly squeezed orange juice.

Staying nearby at the Hotel Only You, we popped in for breakfast one morning. Having seen lots of people sitting in the outdoor seating here several nights, we decided to try it for ourselves. We had 2 x coffees and 2 pastries, they were very good and cost around 5 euros, so a decent price. Staff were friendly too. Can't... More

We bought some pastries here for takeaway - pretty good, but we've had better. The surrounding neighborhood is lovely.

Whilst out walking / sight seeing we popped in for 1 beer and stayed for aroung half a dozen. The staff spoiled us with tapas and first class service. Prior to leaving the barman gave us 2 unusual ceramic beer jugs as a gift which topped off the experience.

After sitting in a few bars and restaurants where it is too dark to read the menu (OK, so I am 65 and I need reading glasses...) this little place was a nice change, though really it was too bright for comfort. The tapas was great, good prices, nice variety, good service, nice icy cold beers, Barca on the big... More

The staff are friendly and tolerant of schoolboy spanish, professionals all. The coffee is top notch and with freshly baked croissants, tostadas etc. This is the place to have breakfast or morning coffee. Madrilenos are coming and going all the time, the place has a great atmosphere.

Staying in Chueca

Neighbourhood Profile
Chueca is the hip, gay neighbourhood of Madrid where many of the streets are narrow and intimate, but where the hustle and bustle and the eclectic storefronts and people give it a distinctly urban feel. The main thoroughfare is Calle Hortaleza and the main square is Plaza Chueca, completely filled with terraza tables serving copas (mixed drinks) during summer. A mixture of trendy and grungy, some of the adult businesses here are explicitly racy in their signage. From the rainbow flags to the signs above the entrances of its many funky bars, to the date spot restaurants, Chueca is a vibrant and colorful place. It's always interesting to explore the different corners of Chueca by day, and by night, the area becomes a major nightlife destination when the clubs open their doors.
