Passed by this place while lost in plaza mayor and realized it was packed with locals and we had to try it! Walked in and were helped immediately by a friendly staff. Got a racione de calamare (came with bread and lemon), olives and two cañas for a little under 10 euros. Friendly local atmosphere. Grab a table or stand... More

We ate here on advice from our tour guide. (Ogo Tours Free walking Tour also very high recommended) The calamares were fresh and delicious, probably the best thing we ate on our trip in Spain. We tried several times to order these again on our travels in other restaurants, but no comparison. The restaurant is very small and full of... More

I ate a sandwich with calamares, it was too simple and a bit expensive!!! Also, the environment inside the place is not very friendly!!!

This place is a hidden gem. Loved the Calamari and the Potato Tart. Service was fast & friendly....yes you might have to stand & eat but its worth it....we got our food to go and was packed up instantly. Friendly service

The waiters are quite efficient and helping but the food is not the best. I got my mouth burnt when eating the calamari sandwich, as it is soaked in frying oil. The sandwich, once at eatable temperature, is quite tasty but their bread is not good. I also ordered some "papas bravas" but they were too salty and did not... More

That's a restaurant I simply loved. It's in an incredibly central location. Yet the prices are fair and the bocadillo de calamares was excellent. I think it is a very authentic experience too for tourist. It may not be the best one or the most beloved by Madrileños, but it's a good place where to eat while being in the... More

Just amazing! We found it near plaza mayor and spend a really nice time there eating calamari, jamon serrano and drinking sangria.

La Ideal makes the best calamari sandwiches in Madrid. Their morcilla and their chorizo sandwiches are equally excellent. All washed down with a glass of Amstel. A great lunch.

I tried several dishes from The spanish cuisine but unfortunately found the callamares average! I was genuinely surprised considering I expected better coz of the ratings.

This place makes an awesome "bocadillo de calamares". Their menu is quite varied, we tried the "patatas aioli" which were pretty good too. The prices are very cheap, we got an excellent lunch for 2 people with less than 10€.

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
