We eventually settled in La Chata after our fruitless trek up the length of Cava Baja, our disappointing experience at El Bonanno, and our despondent return back down past the empty bars of this supposedly lively street! La Chata is a pleasant enough place, the staff are quite friendly, and the food is okay – although not particularly memorable. The... More

Its La Latina, so its a mix of places targeting tourist and those catering to the locals - this is one of the locals that is just away from the heady tourist centre of La Latina. Fried Red Mullet (salmonete) and the Fried Calamares - Staff were really attentive and, even without much english, guided us well through the menu... More

What a memorable evening, thanks to our Spanish brother-in-law! Calamares are perfect, to be continued in the same street for other specialties...

Last year I was in Madrid and for bad luck we choose this restaurant to dinner. Should have been a good restaurant 30 years ago but not anymore. The decoration looks tipycal but the food is a totally disaster. An entrance of potatoes full of oil, the codfish direct from the micro-Wave!!! The waiters are not motivated. A Bad experience.

One of my absolute favourite places to have raciones (tapas servings) in Madrid. And I've tried quite a few! Full of locals enjoying a Night out. Try the cheese plate. And the croquetas. And the Bulls tails! And remember to check out the cool tile-facade and bullfighter posters inside. And last but not least - don't come before 9 pm... More

My husband and i stopped in for a wine and tapa, drawn in by the lovely Spanish tiling at its entrance. Its a lively place with a dining room bigger than the bar space. We stood at a bar rail drinking vino tinto and eating the free tapa of jamon and bread. I can easily see into the dining room,... More

As we came into the restaurant the service welcomed us very kind. The wine was very tasty but the food however must have been a joke. We ordered tapas for two persons at a price of 20€. All we got were four tiny plates. One with a zucchini mix, one with sliced potatoes, one with stale calamari and one with... More

The food was great, and so was the service. Tried the mix of tapas, for two people and it was excellent.

Behind the lavishly tiled facade, La Chata looks for all the world like a neglected outpost of the past. The bullfighting memorabilia may not be to everyone’s taste, but this is an essential stop on a tapas tour of La Latina, Madrid. That is if you are foodie! We melted into a packed local scene sharing a set menu choice... More

Quirky old ambiance, cheap wine, average tapas and a young lady serving us who was clearly having a bad day! This is a homey tapas joint, not the Ritz ... keep that in mind and you'll be OK!

Staying in La Latina

Neighbourhood Profile
La Latina
La Latina is a charming neighbourhood with two unique personalities. At first glance, it’s distinctly old-world, with narrow streets weaving a maze among charming stone buildings in sunny, bright colors like yellow and pink. The other side of La Latina is characterized by a young population and a bohemian vibe, as evidenced by a dynamic and evolving selection of new bars, shops, coworking spaces, and other businesses popping up in the area. In the northern part of the neighbourhood, the Cava Alta and Cava Baja streets constitute the tapas center of Madrid, where each age-old restaurant serves up distinctive specialties like huevos rotos and patatas bravas. Locals have come here for generations to while away hours over drinks and tapas with friends. On Sundays and public holidays, the streets to the south of La Latina metro station transform into a giant open-air market full of locals sifting through tent after tent of art, apparel, and antiques. Any day of the week, the intriguing blend of the traditional and the hip make the streets of La Latina worth exploring.
