My partner John and I found this little place tucked away among the Sassi Barisano area of Matera. The main waiter was a rather portly older man and he was an absolute star. So friendly and attentive and there was no rush - very convivial. The food was excellent too. The interior was very traditional and atmospheric.

We enjoyed drinks and antipasti here on two late afternoons. The owner is an extremely friendly, warm, generous man. We loved getting to know him. He gave us a tour of the place--a beautiful cave bar, restaurant and B&B.

We were her for lunch and each ordered the antipasto vegetable platter, which was a meal in itself, together with fresh bread and house wine.

I visited this restaurant with my family. The food which was served was not fresh, the recipes quite bland and same thing for the flavours. The waitress stated that the pasta was freshly made however this definitely wasn't the case. Furthermore everything was over salty. The wine was good. The waitress manager was unpleasant, I've actually heard her treating badly... More

Stayed in a B and B across the road, and stopped in here for drinks in the evening, as well as breakfast pastry and lunch before leaving. Gracious and friendly staff, making you feel welcome and at home. Generous and affordable drinks (Gin and Tonic particularly good served by the gentleman in the evenings!), and delicious food. Highly recommended for... More

We were looking for a late lunch (2 pm) spot near the hotel and the front desk staff suggested this cute little restaurant at the "foot" of the sassi. Had a delicious 3-course meal for only 15 euros, including a carafe of wine. Fresh greens, yummy pasta, and a pork and potato dish that hit a spot. Was a lot... More

Fantastic food, and great service in this very friendly place. It's a small restaurant, recommended is the amazing bruscetta, sounds boring but they are incredible and large helpings, 1 portion is enough for 2 unless you haven't eaten all day.

After spending the morning walking amongst the Sassi we were ready for a sit down and a bite to eat and came across this very low key looking establishment. We had a lovely simple lunch, beautifully presented and a glass of local wine for the amazingly low price of 10 euros. The proprietor Aldo took great delight in telling us... More

A charming little restaurant/wine bar in a great location looking up at to the Sasso. We enjoyed the 10 Euro fixed menu of steak or veal with large mixed salad, water and a glass of wine. The wine was quite exceptional so we ordered another glass for 3 euros. The lady in charge was very friendly, the service was quick... More

We noticed this restaurant on our first visit to Matera on a dull day. When we returned some days later on a better day we needed a light lunch in relaxing surroundings duirng the long walks around Matera. So we sought out Sax Barisano again. We ate indoors near the open window (but there is outdoor seating too) and enjoyed... More
