The place itself looks great, down into the heart of Matera. The waitress very kindly explained the idea of an innovative cuisine, helping us with our choices.
We had Prosciutto nero lucano, La domenica in famiglia and Giap..in tempo. You should try them all and more, everything was super balanced and the ingredients outstanding. They offered us a Passion fruit sorbet... I had it too fast to take a picture =)
Definitely coming back!!

My husband and I live in Napoli and are so tired of the pizza, pasta, frutti di mare and slightly surly service typical to our area. I was so thrilled to find Tierra with it’s unique menu and wonderful service. We were waited on by the owner whose enthusiasm for her restaurant and its customers shines through. She was a delight, as was the young man who cleared our plates, got us water, etc. Every dish we had was delicious and the dessert of a strawberry “soup” with a pistachio ice cream was to die for. But it was at this restaurant I discovered I don’t like dining in a cave. The air seemed still and there was a musty smell they tried to cover up with something antiseptic. It wasn’t for me. After walking down all the stairs to the dining area I asked to sit outside. Luckily there are a few seating areas, my husband and I were tucked into a little niche and enjoyed dining al fresco while watching the birds flit around the small courtyard. It was a tasty meal and a terrific night!

A rare chance to eat creative, delicious and made with love food in what is becoming a more and more touristic centre of Matera.
Don’t get me wrong - you can eat great food all over Matera too but this place adds that touch of flair and creativity whilst not forgetting about the amazing ingredients this beautiful region of Basilicata has to offer. Great service and a warm welcome only compliment the very talented chef who creates a range of delights!
This place is a modern and delicious treat - so make sure you book a table with them!

We booked in at Tierra and had high hopes as the service seemed excellent and the staff were very friendly when we booked. We got the same lovely warm welcome when we arrived at the restaurant. The restaurant itself is lovely, in a cave and has a nice atmosphere, which we found difficult to find in Matera. Our starters were very nice - snails and beef tartare. However, we were incredibly disappointed in our mains. We ordered the fusilloni and the spaghettini dishes but both tasted like dry pasta and of starch. We barely touched either dish (see photo to see how much was left) and when the waitress came to collect the dishes she asked if it was okay. I said it wasn’t great but that we enjoyed our starters. A waiter came over not long after and asked if the portion was too big or we just didn’t like it, I explained we just didn’t like it “but that it was fine” aka not to worry about it. I would have expected given how little we ate that the restaurant would have taken at least one of the two off the bill but they promptly brought the bill over and ignored us thereafter. They looked thoroughly annoyed we had expressed our disappointment. The dinner went from being a 4 out of 5 on entrance / starters to a 1 or 2 out of 5 based on mains and closing service so on balance I’ve given a 3. I wouldn’t recommend - it was an expensive sub-standard meal and such a shame because I had high hopes.

We found this little restaurant by coincidence and decided to give it a try. It has a very modern design and looks different to the many traditional trattorie we‘ve visited on our trip through southern Italy. We loved everything at first sight: the room, the decoration, the plates and glasses, and the very friendly staff (owners?). But the highlight was definitely the food - modern Italian gourmet cuisine created by a chef who learned his skills while working abroad. Now he‘s back in beautiful Matera and does a great job here! We highly recommend Tierra and were positively surprised by the bill, too.

For those who come to Matera, they can only stop at Tierra Osteria Contemporanea.
The restaurant is located in the historic center, of the town precisely in Via San Biagio, inside a cave house there is the beautiful restaurant, with an open kitchen. Highly qualified staff, but the hosts are the real flagship ( Domenico the Chef and Roberta the room manager) make you feel at ease.
We tasted appetizers, a few seconds and drank a great wine.
We tried the “Bao” is a type of steamed sandwich of oriental origin, very good, we also recommend Our Marinated Amberjack Sashimi Cavice, Tuna Tacos and sublime Spring egg presentation. To conclude the Dove, of their production.

We booked this restaurant after reading the trip advisor comments, and we really had the best culinary experience during our stay in Puglia / Basilicata.
Perfect welcome, 3 attentive waitresses, smiling and above all very efficient, it doesn't take long.
We took the 6-course menu at 58 euros, which means that it is not expensive given the quality of the products and the ingenuity of the chef in constructing the dishes. With each dish we are amazed, it’s truly magnificent.
We also took the food and wine pairing in glasses for 15 euros which is still very reasonable.
I can only recommend this address and above all don’t forget to book.

RUN don’t walk to this delight of fusion food done to perfection and presented with a flair! From our test tube watermelon gratis starter, to a fresh and tangy gazpacho, amazing shrimp tacos and crispy chicken mustard curry Bao, and an unforgettable pasta in an anchovy butter sauce with sugar water infused capers! Oh soooo good! Breads wonderful! ended with a coffee bean nest of green candied chocolate eggs and mini meringues. What a memorable meal! And in a cave! Not to be missed dining experience!

Touch and go in Matera but for a proper dinner we didn't miss Tierra, a simply magnificent place. Very characteristic location, in one of the typical Matera rocks, with minimal furnishings so as not to overwhelm the beauty of the place, but at the same time elegant and tasteful. The exceptional staff started from the welcome and followed with the explanation of the dishes we chose, the wine and so on. Sophisticated menu, both in the offer and, above all, in the quality of the raw materials. Everything delicious, from the cured meats and cheeses, to the first courses rich in flavour, to the delicate and fresh dessert (very suitable for the season). Furthermore, we really liked the welcome entree and the final post-dessert treat. What to say?? A welcoming, well-kept place where you can eat very well.
Passed with full marks.

I can say that we literally fell in love with TIERRA!
To surprise us just arrived, a wonderful view to admire on the terrace but entering, we were speechless! We enjoyed sea and land products ending with desserts... fantastic!
The impeccable service and attention to detail frame unique and particularly sought-after dishes... we can not wait to go back!

After many years I managed to return to this wonderful gem among the Sassi of Matera! Well what can I say, I was impressed the first time, but last night we were really pampered by the girls in the room. Without a doubt the soul of Tierra is Roberta (the owner), kind, on point and always with a smile. He made us feel really good and accommodated our requests due to my allergies. No less important is the cuisine, dishes with a truly strong and characteristic flavour... above all the steamed bao or tacos with prawns and pico de gallo. But I could go on for a long time. Correct prices for the quality they offer, in fact they could even afford a few euros more, given the excellence of the products and the study that goes into every dish. Nothing is left to chance, from service to cuisine. I had seen clearly a few years ago when I bet on these guys full of energy and desire to impose themselves with their philosophy. Roberta and Domenico (the chef) are great, keep it up and even the much coveted redhead will show up! Until next time!!!!!

Absolutely incredible food. The best we had so far during our 1month stay in Italy. We enjoyed the gnocchi, the king brown mushrooms, the grilled octopus and a most decadent lemon cheese cake...never had a cheese cake like this before..EVER.
So very good in fact we are going back taking visiting friends next weekend. Simply must sample more of the menu.
Super nice service and even got to meet the master behind this culinary experience.

Once again TRIP did not disappoint! A different and new proposal in a land of ancient traditions. Don't be fooled by the first impression of the place, it's true, a little cold and obsessively perfect and tidy (in Matera you expect something more... rural), but just sit down to be immediately pampered by the knowledgeable girls, knowledgeable but not intrusive, professionally correct but also capable of entertaining the guest with joy and kindness. Food is a walk with one foot in tradition and the other in innovation, simple things but revisited with taste and skill. The choice of wines is wide, of a high standard but without spending exaggerated amounts; only note: I would have concentrated the offer only on Apulian wines, I find it more coherent with the whole context. Anyway, well done, congratulations!

My husband and I had lunch at this restaurant in July 2023. We stopped solely because it was on the way back to the hotel, but we found a little hidden gem. The young couple of restaurateurs - he in the kitchen and she in the dining room - welcome you with the exquisite hospitality typical of the people of Matera, offering a different menu than usual, contaminated with flavors that come from other countries visited by the couple, all made with the freshest local ingredients ( I ate the best gazpacho of my life, and I lived in Spain for 2 years…)
Don't be put off by the stairs to reach the venue, it's really worth it!

We went to this restaurant for lunch on January 1st. Everything was really excellent, from the starter to the dessert, including the wine pairing. The staff is really kind and helpful, the guys were very attentive to the needs of my children who really enjoyed the dishes. I highly recommend it
