Traditional trattorias in Rome are often a great experience; sometimes not so, alas.... The Regina belongs most definitely in the first group. Close to the main railway station, we had great traditional roman food, good local wine, an incredibly friendly service; the dessert wine was offered and one of us with gluten intolerance was treated not only with GF pasta... The tourist menu makes choosing easier, and is a fixed price option. You'll get bread, wine, two options, and fruit for dessert. The lasagna is outstanding!

We ate here after being recommended by our hotel. We both ordered omelette and fries, we were seated outside as it was a nice evening and the staff were attentive and polite. The food was served in good time and came out hot. The meal was very reasonable and reasonably priced.

Curse forgetting my umbrella. It was pouring rain, I was starving hungry, this place was closest. I opted for the Cotoletta Bolognese. Okay, it's not a Roman dish - the name is the giveaway - but it's simple and hard to mess up. The veal was thick and chewy, topped with a piece of chewy pancetta, with a couple of... More

Awful service, informed I was coeliac, looked like he wanted to throw something at me. Wasn't actually sure what I was going to get-it was packet gluten free spaghetti which was totally fine, but it had a very bad watery tomato sauce with it-wasn't nice, had to load with pepper and cheese for some kind of flavour. Not helpful. Wine... More

We ate here last night at the recommendation of our hotel. The restaurant was simply decorated and we were given a warm welcome by our waiter. The food was simple hot and very tasty and we also enjoyed a bottle of local chardonnay and a complimentary limoncello. All in all a really lovely meal in a relaxed setting.

Our hotel (Astoria Garden) recommended this restaurant and glad we went. No pizzas but we knew this before going in so just an FYI really. Set menu was great value and good choice too. €18 for 3 courses, water and 25cl of wine all went down a treat. Only down side was the fresh fruit was a little 'too fresh'... More

This reataurant does not have somebody outside to lure people in! This restaurant does not need somebody like that because their food sells! The interior is not special but the food is! Pasta's for about 5 - 8 euro's, so simple but tasty! Around you, you see locals eating their lunch. If you are looking for a great restaurant nearby... More

We came here for dinner one evening after getting a recommendation from our hotel. The prosciutto and mozzarella appetizer was very good quality, and we enjoyed the pasta dishes we ordered. I thought they were a little uneven applying salt since some dishes seemed overly salted and others lacking. I would probably go back if I wanted something convenient in... More

Staying in Esquilino

Neighbourhood Profile
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighbourhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighbourhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic centre. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
