I had the green gnocchi and my lady friend the bigoli with prawns. Both meals were fantastic, the wine exceptional and the service very friendly. We did have a slight wait to get a table (at 9 on a tuesday!) so it's worth reserving in advance.

We stayed overnight in Mantua at the Hotel Casa Poli (very nice) and had dinner very close by at Lo Scalco Grasso. Simply delicious food, stylish surroundings and very good value. My husband started with the scallops and bacon linguine and then had the anchovy bigoli. Loved both. I had pumpkin ravioli and shrimp bigoli. (The proprietor, who was explaining... More

Best meal of our 2 week stay in Italy and actually one of the cheapest. A little bit off the beaten track, but as soon as we walked in we were so pleased we'd made the effort - the chef-patron made us feel extremely welcome and explained the menu concept to us; the portions are generous and there is a... Attentive service, excellent cuisine, interesting combination of flavors - we had black ink pasta with scallops and duck with plums and vegetables and amazing nit based desert with salty caramel. Highly recommend this place for an excellent meal and unique flavors.

Lo Scalco is on a forgettable street in downtown Mantua, but the service and the food are anything but! I was here as a solo traveler in May of 2016, and was the first one in the restaurant on a Tuesday night. The proprietor was the only person in the dining room and his greeting and explanation of the menu... More

We stayed in Mantua for a few days and this restaurant came highly recommended by our hotel. A small restaurant with half a dozen or so tables. Greeted by the chef-patron, who is on to help with the menu and wine. He was charming and very helpful. The menu has two sides, the traditional local cuisine and his take on... More

A small restaurant, with the head chef present and walking around, talking to the diners, explaining the dishes, and very reasonably priced. The gnocchi with smoked ricotta, duck breast and pumpkin sauce was out of this world. Absolutely recommended.

It was so good we ate there on two successive nights. It is a short walk from the historic centre and offers some interesting dishes in addition to more standard Mantuan fare. They take pride in their cooking and the service is professional.

The town has a tradition for excellent food, but this is beyond your expectations. Le nuvole dello Scalo, Scalco's clouds is a sublime reinvented modern way to combine squid, cellery and... Oh well, you well have to guess. Owner and chef present and extremely friendly. Price very reasonable. Other dishes and courses as good as the Clouds. Attractive choice of... More

Scalco Grasso is a new type of restaurant, it looks modern, young and architectural. The kitchen is innovative and offers two menus: typical dishes of Mantova and "scalcherie", the chef's creations. The restaurant is situated between Palazzo Ducale and Palazzo Te, near a big free parking on the main street and outside the limited traffic area.
