We enjoy a salad with scramps and artichokes, simple but good. The spaghetti alle vongole delicious! The waiter was very charm.

We stumbled across this Ostaria by luck, off the Main Street and the hustle and bustle. We were welcomed by the host, and promptly sat at a table, despite a number of tables reserved for locals. Dinner was very enjoyable, swordfish carpaccio followed by fried octopus, prawns and scampi. My husband had fillet steak, and whilst there was a mistake... More

To have a taste of Italy, we went to Il Milion. Here you eat good quality every day local food for a reasonable price. We had theatre reservations so we choose a primo and a secondo. I had the Spaghetti con le cozze in rosso and the Fegato di vitello alla veneziana. They were simply good.

We came across this restaurant on a cold winter day and so glad we found it. For the 3 days we were in Venice this was the best of the 4 restaurants we visited. The cuttle fish ink risotto was delicious. We loved the traditional interior and laid back atmosphere. My 4 star rating is only because I felt the... More

While we sat outside to enjoy the weather, the indoor bar area has a cool display of copper and other types of pans hanging from the ceiling. The zucchini and shrimp risotto was fabulous and well worth the wait. The fish we had for our main course was good but I believe we were too full from the risotto to... More

The onion spaghetti is to die for. Literally my send off meal. I have tried to duplicate it at home, but it tastes only vaguely this good. Oniony, creamy, peppery, transcendant. Do yourself a favor and eat here! Eat here and eat the cippoline onion pasta. Ahhhhhh!

Small Piazza a bit out of the way, very busy area with several restaurants, lucky we got a table at Il Milion. We were staying just a few blocks away and would have gone back in a minute if we were not leaving the next day. We have recommended it many times.

Very popular square with three restaurants, so a wait for a table for 7 was inevitable. But worth the wait as we were well looked after. Food was very good and excellent service made for an enjoyable evening. Very reasonable too !

Honestly don't bother - there's loads of other overpriced low-quality restaurants you can visit throughout Venice that might have more charm. Food was oily, serving portions small but expensive, and it didn't have that Italian freshness we've had all over Italy. Staff were indifferent and rude. They forgot to take our order to start with and then forgot some of... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
