Old decor, but the food is tasty and menu offers a great choice of traditional Italian food. The atmosphere is cosy and romantic. The service is attentive despite only 2 waitresses for whole restaurant. I noticed the chef also helped to clear tables so next course could be brought without delay. This is a busy restaurant so book if there... More

I had as a good place to eat in Venice, tested some years ago. Today...as appetizer we had a dish of venetian cicheti (fish snacks)...good. Then, as a main course I had one of the Plat du Jour...most probably was not a today's as it has been clearly heated and recovered from either a freezer or something; the other had... More

We visited this place after our hotel owner recommended it as his favourite. The food was nice but the welcoming was unpleasant. The man behind the bar was staring at us while we were eating and shouted to the waitress almost every time she was approaching him. The food was excellent on the other hand. The atmosphere could have been... More

We visited this osteria in the 1st of January, reserved very late but they still managed to accommodate us. The staff was extremely nice and they spoke very good English too. The food was amazing, we wondered around many places in Venice looking to eat some specialities, but always ended up not truly satisfied. This place was the best we... More

I had lunch here by chance when directing a friend to Fondamenta Nove to catch a ferry to the airport. It is a nice place - I wouldn't quite hit the heights that other reviewers have but I enjoyed a good plate of pasta, wine and coffee for EUR 15. It has a nice feel being quite informal and laid... This is the osteria you are supposed to be able to discover in all the backstreets of Venice but which are, alas, not so plentiful as you might hope. Family owned and operated, frequented by a local clientele, warmly welcoming and attentive, this is THE osteria to seek out. Cross two bridges walking down the (unusually) straight calle directly in... More

Picture this. A low ceiling with natural timber beams that look old enough to have oame off Noah's ark, white washed walls neatly hung old black and white pictures of Venice, Venetian lace covered lights over each table and tiled floors, jazz playing and Italians speaking in their sing song chatter - delightful. That's before I tasted how good the... More

We stumbled across this while getting lost in the backstreets of Venice and decided to try it out later that evening. The food was amazing. Their baccala vicentina was delicious. Also recommend the sardi al saor - sardines in a sweet and sour onion sauce. The service was a bit hit and miss but the food definitely outweighed that issue.... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
