We dashed in here for a quick lunch before catching our plane home and next time plan to spend a leisurely evening here. It was a great experience. The decor is elegant, the staff charming and very knowledgeable about the wines, and the food was delicious. Highlights were the courgette flowers stuffed with ricotta and mint, and the bream with... Located in a Piazalle off a small alley Ristorante ai Mercanti is a bit difficult to find and after our meal I thought not worth the bother. The service was welcoming enough but the food wasn’t up to much. The food had aspirations but missed the mark. The antipasti of rabbit terrine was well seasoned but not inspiring. The Salmon... A little hard to find (leave yourself a few minutes to walk all around the local streets before you find it!) but well worth the effort. Fabulous fab with great service and a pleasant atmosphere. Wasn't cheap but then you get what you pay for. Highly recommended

We found this by accident in a side street but not far from the square and expensive restaurants. Food presentation and service was excellent. We had not booked on a Friday night and were told there might be a 40 min wait but we were shown to our table within 15 mins and wished we could have tried everything on... More

Food wise dinner at this restaurant was the highlight our family's trip to Venice. Though the decor of the room was a bit black for my liking the meal itself was outstanding, very good. I totally recommend this place. The waiters are excellent and friendly too, go with their advise. They shouldn't let you down.

Did not like much the restaurant style (furniture, mise-en-place). Beside that, the food was truly excellent (I had a full meal, including dessert), and so was the service. I highly recommend this restaurant, by far the best I tried in Venice.

The duck breast was Roasted then slightly grilled, it was succulent and flavorful. It was moist and mouthwateringly delicious. It was served with mixed vegetables that were perfectly cooked, with just a little crunch but not overdone. The meat was lean and not fatty either. Very pleased with the flavor & presentation. It was a highlight for our Venice trip!

Two surprises, we found this restaurant, because as per a previous review it is tucked away. The second, it was as good as the other reviews advised. We arrived late into service, with no booking. We were accommodated and from that point on.......... perfection. Very different menu to the vast array of Italians restaurants in Venice and the quality of... More

Our hotel recommended this bistro as we wanted somewhere nice but not too over the top for a birthday. It was everything we could have wished for. We had sardines and rabbit terrine followed by spring greens risotto. We then had Cod and beef skewers and couldn't manage desert. The food was well presented and each course was explained well.... We decided to visit Ai Mercanti for dinner after scrolling through restaurants in Venice on Trip Advisor that afternoon. We didn't have a reservation so tried to arrive early (around 7pm) and although we were a bit later than planned due to a struggle to find the place they were able to get us a table! The food was very... More

Ristorante Ai Mercanti in the heart of Venice between the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco is an upmarket, romantic restaurant in very cool style that enjoys a high-flying gastronomic reputation. The vaulted dining room is decorated in sophisticated terracotta and black with impressive shining globe lighting. The bar is wittily decorated with dressmakers’ forms and sexy corsets – great conversation starters. The menu is classically-inspired Venetian of a high order, focusing on things from the sea and changing every two months to take advantage of the and array of the freshest ingredients in true Italian style and pastas and desserts are all made in-house. In warm weather the dining room sprawls out onto the adjoining campiello for the loveliest al fresco dining anywhere – the Venetians who crowd Ai Mercanti certainly think so.

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
