We came across this place while out for an evening in Cannareggio. We were looking for a good, simple dinner and hotel Marte looked good. What a mistake. I ordered lobster and tagliatelle; we weren't put off when the service was slow; we thought it meant they were cooking a proper meal rather than heating something up. Finally they brought... More

This place is just shocking. It is overpriced and the food is terrible. Don't order wine. You will get vinegar! They charge extra for the bread. It's just a tourist trap. They clearly have no pride in what they do. Avoid!

Quality of the tagliatelle alle scoglio was average, although overpriced (18€ is a normal price in Venice, but the amount of seafood was ridiculous). But what made us more upset than anything, apart from it being pricey and the waiting staff, was their explanation of the bill charges... Bread is charged regardless, whether you take it or not (3€), and... More

We only came here because the place on the other side of the canal which we had wanted to go - pontini - was closed at the time. I fully regretted it. The restaurant has tables and seats outside overlooking the canal, with parasols to provide shade, which can be quite pleasant when there is a nice breeze, however the... More

We were unable to get into Gam Gam across the canal so came here to eat in the shade by the canal. The atmosphere right next to the water is lovely. Unfortunately I did not check the reviews until too late. The staff were more attentive than what other reviews said. The food was not good though. The pizza was... More

We ate here upon the recommendation of a friend and because it was right across the lane where we were staying at the Casa Fornaretto. We ate inside although there are great tables outside. It's not far off the main drag of Strada Nova so not a lot of tourist foot traffic going by. We both ordered spaghetti (of course!)... More

This restaurant was our worst experience so far in Venice. The waitstaff was rude, the drinks were watery, everything was overpriced, they tried to charge us for stuff we did not ask for. So frustrating.

We were on a budget and wanted somewhere to eat at by the side of the canal. This place was available and cheap, and it tasted pretty cheap also. The lasagne was very small, the bruschetta wasn't tasty and the drinks were very overpriced. All the waiting staff were very unorganised and not very polite. Would not recommend this place.

Nice fresh-tasting lightly grilled bruschetta, lasagne very tasty if a little pasta heavy, fegata veneziana quite good, nice wine, but pricey as so many are in Venice. I think this place is better than the bad reviews it`s had.

We were at Pontini just across the canal last week and I noticed that Bepi *near Hotel Marte) was all boarded up with no visible signage. No tables outdoors. I do believe they may be permanently closed. Our food there last year was not good.

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
