Whether for a canal-side lunch or a great evening out, this place ouzes with fun and warmth. Large on atmosphere, attentive service and just pure food 'theatre'. Even if you don't chose Maccaroni yourself, look out for how it is served! Don't go inside this very busy restaurant for a quiet date though......

This was the most perfect place in Venice! Our waitress was funny and friendly and so helpful with the extensive menu! The atmosphere was perfect, house wine was great, and the fish / seafood was the best we've ever eaten. We sat for hours, eating, drinking, laughing and people watching. Even the restaurant cat was friendly! If you're in Venice,... More

We feel so lucky to have stumbled across this restaurant on our way to find somewhere 'cheap' to eat. We purposely diverged from the main tourist strip to find something a little more to our taste and whilst walking past we were immediately drawn in by a bustling atmosphere with great jazz music. We were able to get a table... More

Ate here twice. Staff are friendly and although busy at times (normAl) they do what is required. Maccaroni (home made) caccio peppe is pretty good and preps are the star of the show. Mixed seafood platter was not impressive: sardines dry and small, mussels tiny, octopus was alright but scarce. Tagliatelle bolognese had green peas? Wasnt impressed. Well i necked... More

In a peculiar atmosphere we were seated amongst mostly Italian people, so it is cosy anyway. We were treated on a grilled sardine on the house presented by a local fisherman. Ordered half a litre local wine for 6 €. My wife had a pasta bujata ( coarse spaghetti with a kind of shrimps) my suppa pescato (a mix from... More

We went with my family to eat in this nice typical place. The spaghetti with shrimps, vongole and other fruit de mer was amazing... Surely one of the best I've tried in my life. Also the pasta cacio e pepe was nice. The portion of these two dishes are huge! However it is a pity for the lasagna..really nothing special... More

This is a brilliant place. We had lunch here - enormous portions of succulent seafood with a genuine atmosphere. We tried to go back for dinner the next evening - a Saturday - but it was fully booked and had become a bar as well as a restaurant with loads of people spilling out onto the pavement outside. Go there,... More

We had an advance reservation for a Saturday night and had no problems with being shown to our table. We ended up being moved but the friendly staff made this easy and gladly provided us with 'little extras' (prosecco, soft shelled crab, special side dish, sweet wine with biscuits) all night which was a nice touch. Food is tasty and... More

We found this place by accident and it was so crowded with local people as well as a few tourists we thought it must be good - we weren't mistaken. OK, you have to wait but it's SO worth it! We had the most spectacular macaroni cheese I've ever eaten and the steak was superb, in fact it was so... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
