Came here off the Rick Steves' tip and it didn't disappoint. Service was great, tables were full around lunch time but we didn't have to wait. I got the fruiti di mare and my husband got the lasagna. He said the lasagna was good but nothing special. My meal, however, was fresh seafood in a very simple sauce just to... More

The staff at our hotel gave a few recommendations on where to eat - thankfully Osteria Al Mascaron was one. Best meal we had in Venice. The fish soup was marvellous, pasta on point, and the best Tiramisu anywhere!

We felt in a tourist trap. The food was mediocre, we had the impression that they gave us leftovers instead of baccala' a la vicentina. The service was ok. We definitively do not advice it.

I don't get all the exiting reviews about this place. I ordered the primi plati (min two people) which was enough for just one person. Quality of food - below mediocre. Nothing special at all. The secondi plato was the local Venetian liver dish. It was just as unstasteful as the small 2-person dish. Decided to skip the deserts.

Simple dishes done to perfection. Actually something past that, addiction maybe. Bolognese, pesto, pomodoro with aglio (garlic). And great personalities and feel good music.

I know this place has mixed reviews and I can understand why. The service is a bit abrupt and arrogant, but that's the way they are in this place and you have to forget that and focus on the food. We had a shared a mixed antipasti which was amazing - cured meats, fish, shellfish, etc... - and then a... More

This hole-in-the-wall osteria was recommended by a part-time resident we met in another restaurant. He even told us what to order -- seafood and vegetable antipasto and bigoi with sauce. Good call! I liked the place as soon as I walked in -- a wooden bar, topped by a glass case full of antipasto ingredients on platters, paneled walls covered... More

My lasagna was a slop of bechamel when it didnt even state on the menu that it was white. Spagetthi bolognase had no taste, and no sauce, it looked like canned spaghetti. The prosciutto e formaggi (as an antipasto) had three small wedges of the same cheese to share between four of us, and the prosciutto was tastless. Cover charge... More

We stopped in here on our way to Saint Marks and we were glad we did. We shared the mixed seafood spaghetti and a carafe of the house red. Both were delicious and the server was very friendly and casual. The atmosphere is very relaxed. There was a mix of tourists and locals here. We would recommend this location for... More

Delightful, local restaurant with excellent food. I ordered the grilled fish of the day and it was simply beautiful. Perfectly cooked and delicious. The atmosphere was energetic and casual and reminiscent of a local diner spot you'd find in any city in the U.S., except with an Italian twist. The emphasis is on the quality of the food, so dont... Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
