Notice how all the bad reviews are from people who didn't book a table (but thought they were somehow entitled to one anyway): reservations are a must unless you're lucky, so stop by the day before to book one. This place has more atmosphere than the tiny place can fit. Great food, quirky owner and laughter from every table. We... More

I was here several times and like it always. It is the place where you can see venetian life. Menu is rather small, but all i had tried was simple but very tasty. Fish soup is my favourite.

This is a place run by passionate Veneziani where you can eat and drink local wines and local dishes as in the past. Every staff member really enjoys talking to you about the nuances of each meal you order with a sparkle in their eye. Last week they opened three bottles of wine until we were content. This kind of... More

This is popular restaurant off the Campo Santa Maria Formosa and it is essential to book. A busy buzzing place, the service was slick and the food delicious, the owner is on hand so everything runs efficiently. There are two sittings, and we went to the early one, seven thirty, and it was packed!! Good selection of local dishes and... More

Tried to eat in the restaurant after passing by during the day and seeing all the prizes and good reviews on the door. When we arrived at night the place was half empty and the staff was arrogant and rude. The maître was angry and ironic at us because we didn't have a reservation, again, the place was half empty... Ok, "vintage style" Wine restaurant for dinner. Service staff (also dressed sort of "vintage style"), are ok, but a bit distanced. They seem to have less interest in foreigners. Locals seem to go here for dinner as well as passing by for a glass of wine at the small bar, which is of course a good sign, in a "tourist... More

It was our first night and we had arrived late, but went out searching for our first taste of Italy. This lovely place was one of the few open after 11 and it was pretty full. Delicious wine was served in giant glasses and we ordered a sharing platter of cheese and meats which was to die for. I would... More

Try great wines by glasses with reasonable prices (some of them are the same as directly at cantina). Ask owner Mauro, who is the great wine specialist, to recommend you something special or to simply open bottle of champaign or local frisante with sable (a little show from the owner). Open only for dinner (until 2am!).

Let's say that the wine was excellent and also the gin&tonic ....superb I would say....the bar attendant a nice gentleman with a great experience and know how preparing drinks (we have been fascinating about his ability) made the difference...the food was ok. Nice dinner...I would recommend it .... again food ok but atmosphere very nice.

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
