Yesterday two friends and myself chose to eat Van Kerkwijk, because it was the only one that appealed to us on trips advisor. We called to ask for a reservation, but it is not needed. Once arrived we sat a nice table near the window with a lovely bunch of tulips. The service is very sweet and offered us a... More

I have been probably to Van Kerkwijk 2 dozen times and have brought many of my colleagues, friends and family to this restaurant. The food is always excellent and the service is always great. I have no idea what some of the other reviews talk about. This is not a McDonald's folks. Don't barge in and demand to be seated... More

Two ladies - as nice and hard working as can be - can't cope with all the tables. Delicious food, spot-on beer, but the wait to be served is simply too long.

Worth the wait for a table...lovely friendly service. Grazing platter for entree was delicious. Mains were cooked perfectly. We loved how the menu was presented verbally with no paper. Would recommend highly.

Had the best chicken dish I've ever had ANYWHERE. Yes we had a bit of a wait but time passed quickly with a drink at the bar. Appetizers were delicious but sadly we were way too full for dessert because it looked lovely.

Found this cosy restaurant close to dam square - went in around 9pm, it was full but with a few tables close to finishing we sat and had a drink for 10 minutes and it was worth the wait. No menu, the waitress tells you the dishes on offer at your table. The service was excellent and the food outstanding,... More

They have a very intimate and relaxed vibe but please be prepared to wait 1-2 hours before you will be seated/start dinner. While you wait to be seated you can sit in the small bar area and have a few drinks. They don't have a menu and the options are limited but yummy. Definitely a unique experience.

Very nice place. Very tasty, nice personnel, a lot of interesting and unussual types of food. Sandwich with meat roulette was awesome.

Thank Олег Г

Van Kerkwijk, situated at the Nes 41 just behind Dam square, is a classic Amsterdam cafe and restaurant where you can eat and drink from early in the morning till late in the evening. Van Kerkwijk sisters have chosen a personal approach. That's why a menu doesn't exist and your options are presented at the table by your waiter.

Van Kerkwijk stands for quality food and drinks in an urban atmosphere. Characteristic, easy going, value for money. You feel at home between the regular customers who keep returning for the varied menu and the relax atmosphere.

Van Kerkwijk doesn't take reservations, walk in for a table or wait at the bar with a good beer or wine.

Staying in Red Light District (De Wallen)

Neighbourhood Profile
Red Light District (De Wallen)
To visit Amsterdam and not explore De Wallen (the Dutch name for this area) or to go only to gawk at its saucier aspects would mean missing the opportunity to view some of the city’s most picturesque canals, historic landmarks, and impeccably presented examples of traditional local architecture – not to mention Amsterdam’s own Chinatown, Europe’s largest Buddhist temple and more local treasures. Sure, there are some less salubrious activities drawing the curious to this age-old part of time. Nevertheless, the Red Light District is still a very safe and incredibly fascinating area where at the turn of a corner you can be transported from the dingy glow of modern day neon red to a glorious 16th century Delft blue dreamscape.
