The resto has an new interior and the new owners put in much more effort. Still a fish resto , but much better. Reopening this month, and I heard a lot of good things about them.

We both had the Mussels, which were large, plump and meaty. Service was excellent, we were made to feel welcome. Food was served promptly and was of good quality, considering the location, prices were reasonable. We visited early evening and were the first in, but the establishment soon filled up. If you wished to eat here I would suggest reserving... More

Even it's stated on the door that they accept Visa and Master Card, in reality they don't. The waiter still lives 20 years back in time and is convinced that the card without a chip is illegal for many years (though my card was issued last year in Europe, business Master Card). The food was ok, but too heavy. I... More

We were in Hasselt one night. Wandering around, we noticed this charming small white building almost hidden away amongst the others. We sat inside as outside there were some smokers (something I dislike). The tables are rustic as is the decor, but with a modern twist. The owner speaks great English and is very helpful and friendly. The smoked eel... More

We entered the Karakol by chance. It was later than 21 but the owner let us sit at a table. Karakol and mussels were the food and was a really good! With a South African Chenin and some water, 120€. Not cheap but good. And the owner is really kind!

After a few years we tried De Karakol once again. Still the same quality of mussels and fishfood we're it's known for. Nice interior makes you feel at the coast in Northern France. Service is friendly, sometimes a little bit arrogant. We won't wait no more that long to go back.

This is a fish restaurant. The dishes they serve are ok but nothing special. They have tables outside but it is not very nice to sit outside here. Inside it is small.

My wife and I visited this restaurant on a sunny Sunday evening and were able to dine outside, which was very nice. We ordered a fantastic asparagus as starter (We were at the last days of the asparagus season) and took the Venetian style spaghetti with fish. We both agreed that although the fish was very fresh and tasteful, it... More

De Karakol is a quaint little place in central Hasselt. The food is wonderfully fresh. I've had the mussels there several times, and each time does not disappoint. The mussels are so big and tasty, served Provencial style in a celery & onion broth with a side of a light mustard sauce. The frits (fries) are prepared the traditional Belgian... More

My overall impression is that there is an old-fashioned cook at work in De Karakol. While most of the food was acceptable, it looked as if we went 50 years back in time. For instance, the dishes are typically accompanied by two small leaves of dry lettuce, not even a modest salad. This is not really a disaster though, but... More
