Lovely atmosphere, best service we're had after two weeks in Portugal (not that service is generally poor here), modestly sized menu and reasonable pricing. The Ox Tail stew (with rice) and Alentejo salad were just right. The casa vihno tinto was better and more favourably priced than higher end wines we've had elsewhere on this trip.

Husband and I spent 2 weeks in Portugal and Spain and this was by far the best meal we have had. We arrived right at 730 (opening time for dinner) and were the first table, however within 30 minutes the restaurant was almost full, and this was a Wednesday night. We started with couvert- an octopus salad and sheep's cheese... More

Skip the overpriced mediocre quality of the restaurants lining the square. This restaurant is 50 steps off the square---great food and service.

We had luch at this restaurant (couple with 2 children) because it was recommended by a local lady and we didn't regret. Service was very good and the food even better. Try "bacalhau ao forno"(good for 2 people) and do not miss the prize winning cheese pudding.

Great restaurant - built in the 16th century as an inn for Royals- you will not be disappointed as the food is superb - the steak and lamb chips are excellent. Make sure you don't miss the home made chips!

We were 5 people sharing 3 mains and 3 desserts and 3 bottles of wine - all local tasting pleasures, very cozy and friendly and efficient staff.

The restaurant has high vaulted ceilings and red walls and turned away almost as many people as it contained while we were there. Luckily, we’d thought to get the hotel to book for us. Out of the coverts (the optional beginnings), we chose bread, olive oil tasting and little chicken pies that were very tasty in old fashioned pastry. A... More

I have rarely felt out of place while traveling solo. I did here. No smiling welcome. I was just asked what I wanted, which was a salad and main. They brought over cheese, olives and bread. Note, these are all items that are charged to your bill so refuse them unless you want them. The glass of wine was poured... More

We found the Cafe Alentejo at lunchtime and it was busy so we booked for dinner the same evening. Oxtail and Pigs Cheeks were our choices and were a delight. Rosé and Red wine flowed easily and complimented the meal very nicely. Within a few steps of the main square in the centre of the city this restaurant is well... More
