It's a jewel of a restaurant. You have to have the "bacalhau espiritual" ( spiritual cod fish). And the other dishes are a delight too. In the heart of Chiado. A must visit place even though the neighbours seem busier. Enjoy the garden in the warmer days.. quaint yet beautibul.

great little place in the square, good location and atmosphere. there is a little courtyard out back that you can have your meal in, if there is a free table, otherwise the tables out front are nice too. the food is good - i had the steak sandwich and the beef + patatas bravas were very good.

You have to climb very high to get there (or take a lift during a daytime, non-operational in late evening). Nice service, good food (frutti di mare), good wine, fair prices.

My friend and I both really enjoyed our meal and the wine the waiter recommended us. The terrace was very pleasant.

A wonderful experience as the staff couldn't have been sweeter with our combined 3 young boys. Allowing them to play and draw on the chalkboard--even given them stools to stand on and providing new chalk for them to use. The food was delicious. Simple but well prepared and fresh. Loving Lisbon and Royale Cafe was a big hit with us!... More

We stumbled across the Royale Café in the Chiado, a very pleasant encounter away from the usual tourist traps. We enjoyed very reasonably priced fayre in a relaxed and unhurried atmosphere, with unstuffy staff providing excellent service. The menu offered excellent choice from surf to turf, adding Mediterranean colour and flavour to a good range of Portuguese dishes. Lots of... More

We were sitting in the garden. Amazingly small but a real garden feel due to the living green wall. In January it was cold but heated so very nice. Food was delicious and original. Take the chocolate cake!!

We went to Café Royale after reading about it in a couple of guidebooks. We were very pleased to find a more original menu than in the other places we have eaten here - Lisbon menus all seem to have the same dishes, at least in the "Portuguese" restaurants. Café Royale offers lots of dishes that we hadn't encountered. We... More

It took us 20 minutes to get a menu (despite asking two different waiters). Another 15 minutes to order. Then we watched people who sat down after we had ordered receive their meals before us (including some of the same dishes). Not recommended. Definitely not worth the wait.

This is a really cool little find; very easy to walk past. Bistro/cafe with a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Healthy menu, and decent prices too.

Staying in Chiado & Carmo

Neighbourhood Profile
Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.
