Visited Barracao twice during our recent stay in Alfama found the service, setting, and the food, especially the seafood pasta dishes to be superb.

While in Lisbon, you will surely go to visit São Jorge Castle and later on walk around the streets of Alfama. Plenty of small narrow streets as well as many restaurants. O Barracão de Alfama is a nice small restaurant, nicely decorated with helpful staff speaking English, French, Spanish where you will have opportunity to taste homemade Portuguese food. Sardines... Had a lovely octopus rice and seafood pasta dish for lunch which were served piping hot. Both dishes were fantastically good- seafood was fresh and octopus was cooked to perfection. The ambience of this place was nice- quiet and elegantly decorated. With a little more consistency at service, it would even be better! Waiter was clearly more attentive at 2... More

Very fresh and excellent seafood. Quite big part of grilled calamari or grilled cuttlefish for about 10€. With a small effort on this service it would be perfect.

We stayed in Alfama district which is packed with small little restaurants and fado performances that, at times, feel a little too much. The hospitality of Portuguese food industry is not always as welcoming as I have expected (being heavily visited by tourists). Cultural expectations, I guess. However, this little place was a gem. Really liked their food, it wasn't... More

Indeed - a hidden gem!!! Tucked away in the Alfama - this is well worth the endeavor to locate. The food is very good. I ordered the traditional cod cake as a starter - best in Lisbon! The Seafood and rice is full of flavor - it last of the sea with coriander and spice... exquisite! Service is very good.... More

I just loved this place. Charming, small, and quiet -- a perfect place for lunch after walking around the city. I ordered the Arroz do Mar, which was delicious and packed with fresh seafood. One order is enough to share for two. I chose a white wine from Alentejo which went perfectly with the meal. Prices are really reasonable for... More

We entered late on a Sunday night after being jet lagged coming from Canada and had a great meal however the service was very slow and the kitchen even forgot to cook one of our meals. In the end we had enough food so the mix us was in our favour but it was a really long wait (1 hour)... More

Ordered a salad and asked for dressing on the side. It came drowned in olive oil and covered in salt which made it inedible. When I spoke to the waiter and the manager about it I was told it was my fault with no apology and I was still made to pay for it. Go elsewhere in the alfama for... More

Staying in Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria

Neighbourhood Profile
Castelo, Alfama & Mouraria
Explore narrow streets and alleyways, small cafes and, of course, the internationally acclaimed Fado music. The earth-shattering Great Earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the city but the contiguous neighborhoods of Mouraria, Castelo and Alfama remained standing to this day. These neighborhoods represent Lisbon at its historical best. The cool breeze of the Tagus river will take you up the hills to the sound of Fado, where you'll discover the best "tascas," eat delicious fresh fish and drink great wines. Discover hidden viewpoints and ancient traces of other civilizational ruins in the heart of the Portuguese capital. These are centuries-old neighborhoods that will welcome you to the very best of old Lisbon culture.
