I'm a student in Lisbon and this is one of my favourite places to eat. Besides the incredible prices, the food is amazing and the staff is very friendly. It's a simple place but it's located in the heart of the city. I highly recomend this place!

An oasis of peace in the busy city, Colmeia serves delicious vegetarian food at very good prices. I live in Lisbon and go there at least twice a week..the staff are friendly, I believe the cooks are Nepalese, (but the food is not spicy) there's a nice choice of food accompanied by herbal teas, you can take away or enjoy a quiet and tasty lunch. It´s on the 2nd floor on Rua da Emenda, off the Calcada do Combro, and opens around 12, look for the menu board at the entrance downstairs. Enjoy!

We had lunch here and loved it! Food was delicious, big portion sizes and very cheap. Fresh, healthy, hearty and filling. It's all vegetarian and vegan but so tasty meat eaters would love it too. Dessert was also great. The people working here were so lovely and friendly. We wish we had found this place in Lisbon sooner so we could come back again. Little bit tricky to find but well worth it - look out for the sign in the doorway. Definitely come here :)

The best home made vegan food you can imagine! The restaurant may be a little difficult to find, but we loved it. Went twice there during our four-day stay in Lisbon, and when we come back to Portugal, this great restaurant is undoubtedly on the top of our list.

This restaurant is a bit hidden in the Bairro Alto in Lisbon, but it is worth a visit. It is one of the oldest vegetarian restaurants in the country (maybe the oldest one?), the lady who owns it is very kind (and luckily she speaks English!), and the food is good quality stuff. When I went there there wasn't a big selection of desserts, but that's the only thing I can complain about!

Nice lady serving good vegan food! It is a bit quiet and hard to find (second floor of the building) but I enjoyed the food, and would strongly recommend.

Very central, but on the second floor, off a side street, A Colmeia is a little out of the way, but well worth the effort of seeking out. Occupying a series of separate, interconnecting, gaily painted rooms - a couple with great views down towards the river - the Colmeia concept is based around simple but delicious, freshly cooked food which you can choose at a self-service counter and has a friendly, down-to-earth and unpretentious feel. Run by a charming, mother and daughter team, who are on hand to advise on and serve your choice of meal, the atmosphere is calm and relaxing. Prices are very reasonable, especially considering that all the food here is freshly prepared on a daily basis, making it probably unique among other vegetarian restaurants. I was also informed that Colmeia has been in existence for over forty years, and is Lisbon's oldest established vegetarian and macrobiotic restaurant. So, they have to be doing something right!

It's on the second floor, on a remodeled apartment. Very basic and simple. The staff (mother and daughter I think) are very nice and pleasant. They had a great idea, serve simple vegetarian food for lunch. It's a buffet style affair. You choose 2 main courses (I chose the strogonof seitan and the soy sausage wrapped in bulgur and cabbage, while my wife chose the leeks and the soy sausage), and 3 side dishes. Basically an almost full plate, that they serve for you. After that it goes to a little electric oven to be reheated, and it's brought to you to the table. The food was nice, but nothing I can't do at home, as an average vegetarian home cook. The price caught me by surprise, €8,50 per plate of reheated food. I mean, for lunch, in downtown Lisbon, reheated food... I expected maybe 5, OK even 6 Euro. My wife left the restaurant saying that she was still hungry, and could eat something more. Having said all that, there are not many options for vegetarian food in the area for lunch, so I guess it will have to do. There are meat buffets around the corner for half that price.

If you can find this place then the reward is a quiet calm second floor cafe that serves wholesome veggie food with generally half or a third of it being vegan. Don't go too late as they appear to only make enough for 'lunch' so my 14:30 arrival was the last bits! It's all tasty but wholesome so not salty, spicy or amazingly seasoned but wholesome, healthy food. There's salt, olive oil & vinegar offered. My server was a lovely lady just over 60 but looked 50+ so calm, okay English and very sweet. I felt like I was in someone's home as you enter an apartment block to access this place on the second floor, some windows have a great view of the river/estuary and this old tall terraced streets. I'd go again just for the piece and quiet!

A Colmeia is a very nice place to be. The restaurant is in the second floor of a building, located directly in the city centre of Lisbon. The walls are painted in different colours. The people working at "A Colmeia" are very frienldy and welcoming. You have the choice between different components of a meal. The tea is for free and there is a salad coming with every meal. I went there twice in two days of a lisbon visit and i can definetely recommend "A Colmeia".

I was delighted to find A Colmeia near to where we were staying in Bairro Alto. There was a warm welcome and the owner explained (in English) what her mother had just freshly cooked. It all looked lovely. We had a home-made slightly spicy pie with short-crust pastry; fresh pumpkin; cauliflower in a light sauce and a generous helping of lentils. There was a good choice and combination of dishes - all on display fresh out of the oven. Service was very quick and the restaurant was very clean - simply but tastefully furnished. For pudding we had a delicious apple crumble with oat flakes and almonds on top - it was lovely! To drink we had a beer and a freshly made apple juice. It was good value and for two of us, with a salad for starter, main course and crumble, it came to Euros 24. We will definitely go back there soon to try the roasted tofu and stuffed tomatoes!

Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.
