you get transposrted to the early 20th century Athens eatery under a row of big retsina barrels mostly local nationals and central market workers . Greek traditional dishes with emphasis on soups and grilled fish, excellent retsina, ,(do NOT visit the WC)

Tucked in just west of the vegetable stalls at the central market, you will find no sign of a restaurant; just a wall with some steps going underground. Diporto means '2 doors' and that is all the clue you will get. When you bravely descend...More

We ate an excellent dinner here. We arrived late, so the music was just ending, go earlier so you can enjoy the entertainment. The owner/chef offered us a fixed menu - fish, lamb, a vegetarian dish and wine - all of it was very flavorful...More

This unmarked and totally unchanged room gives one a glimpse of what eating out for the working classes must have been like 100 years ago. If the food was anything like Diporto then it must've been fantastic! Do not miss this place

Wonderful traditional taverna with excellent food that you choose from big pots in the kitchen. Retsina from huge barrels, crusty bread, generous portions, good service and excellent traditional Greek fare make this taverna a pleasure to support. There are only 8 tables and he closes...More

We visit Diporto every time we visit Athens, sometimes for many days in a row. It always offers the most tasty simple traditional food downtown (cuttlefish, fava, beans soup, probably the best chickpeas soup in the world, small fish, salad) and for 10 euros per...More

Omonia
Omonia Square is as plain in appearance as Syntagma is
grand. Surrounded largely by functional blocks from
the 1950s and 60s and no longer boasting its
underground stalls, the square is now mostly
frequented by immigrants and bargain shoppers. The
most rewarding area to explore is to the south. Set
off down Athinas Street, with the Acropolis gradually
coming into focus in the distance, and you will get a

Dear Stephen I have no idea. If is closed that's a bad news for an amazing traditional and family style restaurant.
