An interesting traditional smorresbrod restaurant in a cozy cellar, which is inevitably pricey because of it's location, but seems well patronised by locals. I would have thought that the portions would have been a larger given the price - DK 140 = £18 for two small plates of herring with lentils and a minuscule slice of bread. However that was... More

I have been a regular patron of Gitte Kik over the last twenty years and they are still my favorite Danish "frokostrestaurant". They have all the classics, their fried marinated herring is particularly memorable, so is their steak tartar, and don't forget their warm steak sandwich or the pork rib. And finish the meal with one of the ripe cheese... More

Linguistics and History. Standing in the cellar doorway into ”Slotskälderen hos Gitte Kik” Smörrebrödsrestaurant, in Fortunsträde 4 (Street of Fortune (gambling, brothels – in older times, 1990'ies! Gambling is perhaps easier to legislate about!)), you have a sideways glance to your right to Christiansborg Slot (now: Folketinget/ Parliament), hence the double-name: ”The Castle's Cellar chez Gitte Kik”. In the early... More

We ended up in the center of town for lunch. While there were a lot of sidewalk cafes around, and not a few American restaurants, like TGI Fridays, our guide pointed us to a basement café that served the traditional open faced sandwich. And It was different and unique food – something different. I had smoked Herring for the first... More

A great way to experience Danish smorebrod. Great service and good food. Choose your plate from the offer table and sit down at your table where it will be delivered.

We got off the 2 hour tour, was raining and we found this little gem. Totally by luck. Restraunt was almost full but was lucky to get a table by toilets. Didn't matter! Everything we had was incredible. No menu, you go up and order from the plates you see. We didn't have a clue. Said I wanted herring looking... More

We were in Copenhagen visiting some Danish friends when it came to lunch time and my friend got very excited about where we happened to we were just walking past Slotskaeldern. We asked if they happened to have space for four and then managed to squeeze us in. Our Danish friends told us about the etiquette of the open sandwich... More

Delightful lunch venue found by chance close to tourist transport node point. Full of locals, always a great recommendation, and apart from us not a tourist in sight! Bustling popular place, great Smorrebrod. Fantastic history to see on the walls. Unequivocal recommendation!!

Whether you like "Smørrebrød" or not this is a genuine Danish experience! And if you happen to like the real smørrebrød it is a real, genuine treat ... not to be missed! The right atmosphere and service and you pick your choice fresh from the counter - with a "lille en" you've made your day in Copenhagen!
