We visited here unaware of the reputation for the fish and chips and thought we had discovered an unknown gem..... not the case quite obviously. Drinks served in the bar/restaurant area and food ordered in a separate bar. Worthy of note that dogs are welcome...More

We always try this amazing place and to be perfectly honest, it is consistently good , never really been disappointed and always very busy. I tried the trio of fish of skate, bass and haddock last time and the crab platter this time, all very...More

Busy pub serving great fish and chips. The pudding was huge so don't order one each! I ordered a small fish and chips which was just a normal portion as far as I'm concerned. Serving local wine which was also good.

Visited the pub when we went to Slapton Beach recently, the fish & chips were superb and served quite quickly an excellent choice.

The only NOT dog friendly eating place in the area, but the food is great and there are plenty of tables outside.

Was told this place does amazing fish and chips, well I'm sorry I disagree. So many bones in my Haddock I felt sick. Why call it 'fillet' when it clearly isn't. Also had to sit outside as dogs not allowed inside.

I have been visiting this pub/restaurant/take away for years and have always had great fresh fish. But I visited this June and had probably the worst cod and chips that I have ever had, and that includes anywhere inland. The fish was dry, overcooked, and...More

Lovely location and they serve a great fish and chips. I had mine with mushy peas. I ordered the medium cod which was enough. My only suggestion for improvement would be to serve home made chips. Then it would be unbeatable.

We stayed outside and all those with dogs did so too. If you want to be inside there are other options in the area

Others replies probably cover the issues raised well enough. I would only add that I would not consider the Inn as providing fully accessible service for the disabled especially as there are internal steps from the family... More

The Start Bay Inn is a family run unspoilt pub right next to the beach which specialises in seafood. It has been run by the Stubbs family since 1977.We serve fish and chips to die for with a portion size to suit any appetite. We also serve an extensive choice of locally caught seafood which is displayed on our specials board. The scallops are hand picked from the Start Bay sea bed by Paul Stubbs the previous Landlord and dressed by either Clair, or Gail his daughters or Stu who are partners in the business. All the crab is dropped off live in the back yard where we dress it. We serve non fish choices with local steaks and burgers being favourites. Vegetarian options are also available.A children's menu is available and if you don't want your little ones having chips again then salad or jacket potato is offered as an alternative. Our sweets cabinet is always well stocked and local ice cream available year round. The bar has a good selection of real ales and local cider and a reasonably priced wine list.Seating is either in the bar where in the winter we have an open fire, the children's room or outside on the patio on the sea front. We pride ourselves on reasonably priced generous portions with good service by happy staff. We are not a restaurant or a gastro pub. We are an honest pub serving good food at reasonable prices which is why we are busy.
