Should we ,once a day, humble ourselves in some manner? The church is now only a bizarre affectation of the ignorant and a tourist attraction to the "enlightened" and sanctimonious American. The gilded and bejeweled boutiques, just beyond St. Stephen's cathedral, buzz with socialist EU bureaucrats from Brussels. Yet to sit down with a tiny open faced sandwich and quaff... More

A must do! Brilliant! Well made open sandwiches, massive selection and really enjoyable with a pfiff of bier. Visiting Vienna and not entering this place is a mistake.

Pieces of traditional dark bread served with variety of spreads: Liver, herring, eggs, cheese, vegetables, etc. The dining-hall is very small and crowded. Personnel is quick and helpful. If you want to nip at traditional Austrian "brotchen" and to mix with local folks - this place is for you. Warning: For traditional Wiena cup of coffee please look for another... More

I saw this place on Rick Stein's city weekend programme and it looked brilliant. And it is. And it was next door to our hotel. The sandwiches are lovely and the small beers (pfiff) perfect. Cheap, quick and very convenient fast food.

Now that was a nice surprise. I was a bit skeptical at first. I thought open sandwiches with spreads would all have the same taste (i.e. Mayonnaise ) and be quite blend. That was not the case at all. We had a few of them and they all had their distinctive taste. One sandwich = 1,50€. Our favorites were the... More

Hidden from the main street, this tiny sandwich shop sells a selection of delicious open sandwiches (some 20 types) on dark Austrian bread. You can order a small beer to go with them - a perfect light lunch or a snack. Brilliant unique place.

This is an Institution of Vienna. Whom is on the Petersdom and boared of all the tourist-thinks hast to go there. Dipping into the real Vienna, you have to take a small Or lardge beer and a sandwich an chat with the real residents of the city. No trip without a short stop.

Great place for a snack or even a light lunch or breakfast. All the sandwiches (fish ones in particular) are great and the prices very decent.

We stopped in here for a quick lunch and it was really nice! Their selection of sandwiches is really varied and includes some veggie options too. On top of that they have a variety of bio juices which are super tasty. Staff are really nice and the atmosphere is brilliant! Definitely a recommend! We will be back for sure.

Staying in Inner City

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
