It is an option. It is not something special but it is ok just for a quick coffee or a chocolate. The service is not on a great mood but we can live with this.

I was recently in Vienna for a conference and wanted to experience an authentic Viennese cafe. Local friends recommended Cafe Hawelka and it did not disappoint! It is a historic Cafe and there are plaques and memorabilia outside the cafe as well as within if you want to learn about some famous past regulars (many artists and musicians!) The coffee... More

Popped in for a quick coffee and ended up having a sachertorte. Which was very good. My father had the warm apple strudel which tasted very nice. Nice place to be, staff were polite and helpful. Price of coffee is a little steep but that may be Vienna in general.

This is an old traditional Viennese cafe located in Stephansplatz that opened in 1939. Worth the visit when you're in the area. Stop by for a coffee and an order of Buchteln (yeast cake with plum jam). 1 order has 5 pieces, enough to share between two people. The place has no menu, so don't ask for one like we... More

This is a very old Viennese institution. Family run since the 1940's. I don't think the decor has changed since then which is good. Wobbly Wooden floors and old wooden chairs. Great atmosphere. Fantastic hot chocolate. I'm not sure if they offer food here. Possibly just cakes.

We spent our last few hours in this comfortable old cafe drinking melange and eating chocolate cake. It was a very good way to take our leave of this wonderful city and I will think of its dark, warm interior often - whenever I want good coffee and somewhere to sit and read.

What a lovely place to sit, inside in the rather dark but atmospheric cafe, or outside and have a coffee and, of course, apfel-strudel with cream! Our favourite haunt!

As a person living In Vienna and knowing many other coffee houses in the downtown where to spend nice time, I really recommend you NOT to go to cafe Hawelka. It lives of past fame, but nowadays the place is awful. The coffee has a standard price of coffee in Austria but tastes terrible. The service is not professional at all,... More

I once wandered into this Cafe 10 years ago while I was a student spending a weekend in Vienna. Back then I recall it being a dark, smoky little cave of a place and was greeted by Mr. Hawelka himself upon entry (he was a fixture to the left of the door). I went back here with my wife to... More

Neighbourhood Profile
Inner City
In Vienna's best-known district, pedestrian boulevards Kärntner Strasse and Graben connect you with landmarks such as the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), Vienna’s iconic Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) and the vast compound of Hofburg, the Habsburgs’ former Imperial Palace. Peek down side streets such as Annagasse and Weihburggasse, and Graben’s Seilergasse and Habsburggasse, to get a feel for the centre. The Imperial Apartments and the refreshingly demystifying Sissi Museum are must-dos at Hofburg. Spacious squares such as Am Hof and Freyung often host beautiful seasonal and antiques markets.
