As the usual place for a short coffee break was full (due to the Hay Festival) we happened upon the Old Electric Shop. We were in for a delightful surprise: Not only does the place offer an eclectic mix of handmade home goods, Christmas decorations,...clothes, shoes, rugs and other interesting things, the restaurant offered a vegan / vegetarian meal! And what a meal it was! Made with love by a skilled chef we tried everything on the menu and were delighted! And to top it off, a lovely band with fiddle and accordion was playing to a candle lit atmosphere. Highly recommended, and we will definitely visit again ♥More

Good vibes in this cafe. Quirky and fun interiors. ‘Hot’ drinks came in small glasses with no handles, so the drinks are more like luke warm. Expensive slices of cakes and dry dry dry. Expecting to pay London prices in Hay, but the quality has...to be there to back it up. No functional toilet, so had to pay 30p to use the public ones.More

I love the old electric. I’ve been going there for years. The staff are easy to get on with, friendly and they understand me well as a regular. The food – to a meat eater with other choices in town, and with it all being...vegetarian and vegan – is often fascinating, and interesting enough to make me buy on occasions. It’s always good when I do. Otherwise, I stick with coffee and cake. They make excellent coffees that they want to get right and will correct upon the rare complaint. The cakes are always good fun and good quality. The overall atmosphere is very nice; relaxed, friendly, even familiar and – like I’ve mentioned – understanding and down to earth. The shop is always adding new, up to date things as well as the vintage items, so worth looking around on any visit. I can’t fault it, a great place that’s exactly my style. I especially like that they play music inside; sometimes with live bands before COVID caused the need for social distancing.More

Delicious lunch - not a problem ordering both gluten free and vegetarian food! Great to be able to have a wander around the shop after lunch too.

Underwhelming. The environment is lovely, beautiful decor and interesting shop with a nice menu. However the staff are quite unapproachable and uncaring. They got our order wrong and then came back to charge us for the extra cake we had to reorder. Not much kindness...or thanks from the staff for our custom. Doesn’t take much to serve coffee with a smile as a waitress myself I recognize the importance of good customer service.More

Very good vegetarian breakfast with plenty of choice in quirky surroundings I would recommend the breakfast with roasted heritage tomatoes, feta and avocado. Very friendly helpful staff.

The coffee we waited for for l0 minutes was totally undrinkable - it was like the water from the coffee machine that was used to clean it. The glasses that it came in were dirty. The area was unclean where we sat also. We had...to leave after paying £5 for 2 coffees. Would not recommend this place.More
